A pleasant, purpose built resort, Calahonda gains no stars for traditional character, but plenty for its friendly atmosphere and no-nonsense sun, sea and sand formula. As well as four golf courses and some tennis courts, the resort has a large array of shops, bars and restaurants. You might have to search around for a meal that's truly traditional. But if you're happy with cosmopolitan fare or the ubiquitous paella, there's more than enough opportunity to enjoy some quality cuisine. If you're looking for a quieter atmosphere, it's worth popping down the coast a couple of miles to Puerto Cabopino. This pretty little resort has some delightful beachside chringitos perfect for an al fresco seafood dinne. And for a bigger helping of Andalucian atmosphere, head into the hills to Mijas. Once a retreat for bohemian artists, this picture postcard village cascades down the hillside in a blaze of white-washed buildings. Hire a burro taxi and take a leisurely plod up the rocky footpath to the Sanctuario del Calvario, a 16th century shrine which was once the Mecca for the barefooted Carmelite monks. Alternatively, visit the town's craziest attraction, the Carromato de Max, a museum of miniature marvels, including a shrunken head and a copy of Da Vinci's Last Supper painted on a grain of rice.
