5 days in the RIVIERA

Just a short stay! A really great hotel-asked for high floor on side with afternoon sun and this is exactly what we got (facing away from the marina) From check-in to service in the restaurant the staff were great especially Roberto and Alex (sorry for not mentioning all restaurant staff- they really made you feel welcome) We sat on the terrace several nights and was impressed by the entertainment-especially the classical singers! The hotel is built on a slope which means that the pool is at a lower level from the bar/entertainment room. The poll is accessed by a staircase and while this was not a problem for us many of the guests were quite elderly. This a particular problem when the small lift to the pool and beach broke down-it was out of availability 4-5 days! I heard one lady with a mobility scooter state that without the lift she was unable to reach the beachside walkway! The poolside cafe- the range of food I feel could be improved-we had a pizza which we had to return (never before returned a pizza!) The rose wine however was fine!! There plenty of bars cafes around the hotel but it is worth mentioning the Bar Ole It is situated in a small square along with 3-4 other bar/restaurants. There is real buzz and always packed!Richard is a great host- go out of the front doors turn right-it is 200-300m between the beach and the upper road. The marina is a must-classed as top marina in the world! Again a real buzz with bars and restaurants! We will certainly return to the RivieraMore

My husband hurt his leg night before we flew out and it didn't get any better while we were there but staff were really helpful and as the hotel has plenty of sun beds etc.. We found plenty of place to relax and chill out. Evening entertainment was good too especially comedian and country and western singerMore

Rita M,

Great Hotel, Great Holiday

We returned from this hotel one week ago. We stayed for two weeks, through Thomson, having had recommendations by two separate groups of friends. On arrival, our check-in was excellent - very quick and problem-free. We had originally asked for a high room with twin beds, but were given a room on the second floor. This was actually a huge advantage, as there are only two lifts, always full, and so we were able to use the stairs. Our room was lovely. The hotel was refurbished in 2013, so all the rooms were very modern. Lovely large bathroom with walk-in shower. Our room overlooked the swimming pool and we had a lovely view of the Marina from there. Also the beautiful tree, called Araucaria, which did not in any way spoil our view. Any noise from the evening entertainment was well masked by the double glazed patio door. Very nice lighting in the room, and plenty of storage. Not brilliantly sound-proofed, but we weren't bothered by that. Our floor was extremely creaky, even though it was new, but no-one complained, only us when we had to visit the bathroom in the middle of the night, inevitably waking the other one up!! We used the air conditioning quite a lot, which was quiet and easy to sort out. The beds were good for a short time, but found to be hard for a normal night's sleep. The Maid Service was excellent. Also, for any maintenance or ironing board requests, the response was immediate and first class. The fixed payment charges for safes and fridges were high. We paid for the safe, but somehow managed without the fridge. This for a 4-star hotel is not good. We could not keep our bottled water cool, nor any milk we bought to supplement the small amount supplied for tea and coffee making. I have previously mentioned the terrace where we spent time in the mornings. We did feel somewhat isolated, and it would have been very nice to have been able to sit in the sunshine by the pool, and to have had easier access therefore to drinks and snacks etc. There was a shortage of seating outside generally. The pool bar had tables and chairs, most of which were in the shade. Just the way it was designed. Now to meals. We were on half-board. Breakfasts were excellent, with lots of choice, hot and cold, and the fruit was good. The way we like our coffee and tea in England is very different from in Spain, so here we had to compromise! Water is rarely boiling, but the staff have lovely smiles and truly want to please, so that makes up for the not-so-good tea and coffee. Staff in the dining room, as elsewhere in the hotel, were the most friendly we had experienced, and they just could not do enough to make you happy. In the dining room particularly, Roberto the Maitre D was away during our first week. When he returned, the staff seemed much happier and worked even better and more relaxed as a team. One waiter was rather difficult and isolated himself from the others. The evening meals, I'm sad to say, didn't always meet with our approval. There was show cooking, which was not always good, as well as the normal hot and cold buffet. Hot it usually was not. The vegetables were never fresh, and were usually a bit of a mish-mash. After some complaints to the Holiday Rep Kristina (who incidentally was wonderful) they did improve. The heaters really needed to be much hotter in order to retain the temperature of the food. Such a shame. We tend not to lie on a sunbed in the sun, but after breakfast, in the wonderful sunshine which we had for most of our stay, we would take our papers etc on to the terrace, sit on normal chairs, and spend an hour just relaxing with drinks from the pool bar. Then we would slowly saunter along the beautiful promenade and find somewhere (loads of good choice) for lunch. The promenade was easily accessible from the separate hotel lift which also had access to the pool area and garden. Our room key gave access to the gate on our way back. The promenade was beautiful, and ran from Torremolinos, through Benalmadena and on to Fuengirola. There was also a bus service to take you to most nearby places, and cabs which were quite reasonably priced. On one of the two dull days we had, we decided to go into the main shopping area by cab. Having looked around for a while we realised that the Cable Car was easy to walk to, and so we spent a very pleasant hour or so away from it all in the hills. Fantastic views. It was possible to go further up and watch a show of falcons. Our only Thomson trip was to Marbella and Puerto Banus. We were picked up a reasonable time and had a very pleasant half-day, returning about 4.30. Our tour guide Enrico was very informative and amusing, with a good standard of English. Spent some time in Old Marbella, which was a delight. Lovely scenery, tiny cobbled streets and lots of nice shops. Puerto Banus was extremely busy, but we managed to find a pleasant back-street for a very nice lunch, not over-priced. The Marina in Benalmadena is worth a visit. Some very nice shops and restaurants, and boats of course. Easy to walk round, and not overly busy, at least at this time of year. At the rear of the hotel is a very busy dual-carriageway road. There is a grassed area in the middle, and plenty of pedestrian crossings. Lots of supermarkets closeby. Once inside the hotel, we were not aware of any road noise. The hotel was for Couples only. Most couples were "returners", and the atmosphere was extremely friendly and nice. I haven't yet mentioned the evening entertainment, which was generally very good, and the bar staff were very friendly and helpful. While we were there we talked about whether we would go back. Apart from the evening meal, there is really nothing we didn't like about the hotel or the holiday. Benalmadena has much to offer - lots to do, gorgeous weather, and a very good area to explore. We hope to return some time soon. The best thing about the hotel was, without doubt, the staff.More

A super hotel!

My husband and I have just arrived home after spending eleven nights staying at this beautiful hotel, where rooms, staff and food was fantastic! Our room was lovely and clean, kept that way by a lovely young Spanish lady. The shower in the bathroom was of a four star quality, the water was always hot. Nothing was too much trouble for the very efficient staff from reception, bar/pool staff. If you are looking for a very relaxing holiday this is the hotel for you. Whilst the clientele was mainly over sixty; most of the people were friendly. Some came to the hotel a few times per year and some people had been going for years, that speaks volumes about the hotel which was refurbished about two years ago. Some people left a lot to be desired as to how they dressed for evening dinner; it was a four star hotel and some of the men dressed in sloppy tee-shirts and jeans as though they were ready for working on a building site. It states in the Hotel brochure that no shorts nor shirts without collars must be worn in dining room for the evening meal but obviously some people are not used to four star dining. Most of the people dressed appropriately. We couldn't fault the food which was delicious and the choice was superb for all the courses plus the Tapas Bar which I tried on several evenings and enjoyed. There was also the choice of enjoying an Ala carte once per week meal in their exclusive restaurant which had forty covers. We tried it and there again the staff, two lovely young ladies served our delicious food. The breakfast was also very good; we have stayed in several four star hotels over the years but this one beats them all for the selection at breakfast. There was a delicious, creamy porridge available every morning along with watching the staff make your fresh pancake or omelette with some delicious fillings. There was a good selection of bread and buns plus cakes, fruit, fresh, sliced pineapple, melon, and a bowl of lovely mixed fresh fruit along with the usual cheeses, jams, cereals, eggs, scrambled, fried, boiled, bacon, tomatoes, baked beans, two different kinds of cooked sausages, fried bread, the choice was endless! I don't know how anyone could complain about the food, but, yes, some people did!! Our room was a twin bedded room on the third floor overlooking the crazy golf course and although we got no sun on that side of the hotel you could see the sea at the side. The two lifts were very efficient. Although there are approx. six steps down to the dining room there is also a ramp running parallel. Even though it mentions in the brochure that no beds were to be saved unless actually using them, selfish people went down prior to breakfast and put theirs towels on them. My husband lay on a sunbed for two hours just after lunch and there were two beds covered with towels and no one used them during that time. There did seem to be plenty of beds available though as some were on the grass on three levels. There is a super lift that takes you down to the pool area and grassy areas along with the promenade were there is a secure gate to get out and in which we found very handy. Some people in these reviews have commented about the bar prices but had they been to the local pub across from the Hotel called Mularkys where their prices were dearer than our hotel. You are staying in a four star hotel so everything is on a par. The evening entertainment in the bar was excellent on most evenings and the bar staff (especially the ladies) were very efficient at taking our order and delivering it pretty quickly (the men (waiters) never seem to move from the bar area and they weren't making up the drinks as the ladies seem to do that! Is this equality or what gentlemen? The buses to Fuengirola and Torremolinos ran across the front of our hotel and they were quite frequent. The fare was a reasonable price, just two prices 1.55 euros or 1.65 euros. We enjoyed the free blanket trip to Nerja, the coach picked us up from our hotel. There was no pressure to buy anything and the trip last from 9-45 am till 5-45pm. Our guides were Dawn and Lorraine who were very knowledgeable about the area which made the trip interesting. We had to pay a small fee to go on the road train around Nerja which was also enjoyable. This hotel was about the best four star hotel we have stayed in and we have stayed in some really good ones over the years. And, we will definitely be returning.More
