Has potential !

Hello Ladies and Gents, Please find our review of Hotel Riviera, Benalmadena. If you find the review of help, please click the green helpful button at the end. Thank you. My Wife and I stayed here for one week, from Sunday 7th September, 2014. We originally booked the holiday with Thomsons in February if I remember correctly and wrote to the hotel, asking for a nice room. We did receive a nice reply, confirming the request, but advising that a nicer room could not be guaranteed, as the hotel was busy and they receive many similar requests. Fair enough I thought. I couldn’t actually see an option on the Thomsons site, to book a superior room, so I was either being daft, or all of the rooms were taken ? Even though we booked with Thomsons, the flights were arranged with Monarch and this proved a little awkward in terms of pre booking seats. It wasn’t until sometime later that we found this out and could not pre book on the Thomsons or Monarch web site, we had to ring up Monarch with credit card in hand. Not sure how much that phone call cost us ? I have to say that both flights with Monarch were excellent. On arrival at Malaga Airport, we had a very long walk to the coach in an underground Car Park and was left to stew in the hot coach while we waited for others to arrive. When arriving at the Airport for the return journey, the Thomsons rep told us to queue at gates 415 / 416 if I remember. The queue`s were long and slow. After about 40 minutes, an Airport official told us to queue at any Monarch gate, as they accept all flights. So don’t listen to the Thomsons rep ! After about half an hour on the coach, we arrived at the hotel. We were handed the card for room 515. The room was modern, clean, tidy and worked well, especially the a/c and hot and cold water. We did enjoy a part sea view but also a sad looking Car Park and the busy road. Our room was on the right hand side of the building, as you look from the road. The balcony enjoyed the sun in the late afternoon / early evening. It was roasting on the balcony. With the heavy doubled glazed doors closed, we could not hear the traffic. Like most people, we then returned to Reception when they were quieter and collected 2 towels for a 40 euro deposit, the key to the fridge for a 5 euro deposit and also paid for the safe key at 3 euros per day. When you want to change your towels, just take them to Reception and they will sort this for you. Newspapers are also on sale behind Reception and usually arrive about 9.15a.m, each morning. The Mail was 2.20 euros and the Mirror 2.50 euros. FOOD: We found the food very hit and miss in the main Restaurant. Most breakfast options were served cool or lukewarm, so I mainly just had toast. The sausages were sad looking. The Evening food was a little better and sometimes warmer. We did dine in the A la carte Restaurant on our last night. You are allowed to dine here once every 7 days and it was very nice. I recommend a visit here. Just go to Reception and book it with them, they will hand you a ticket. Snacks at the pool side bar were cheap, good size portions and tasty. Most sandwiches are served with a small side of fries, so don’t order a separate portion of fries, unless you are feeling hungry. DRINKS: Again the Hotel prices were very fair. A pint and a half of lager were charged at 5.20 euros, which I think was San Miguel on tap. A pint of Carling was 5 euros. Im afraid the San Miguel if that was the brand, was shocking. It was tasteless and lifeless, as flat as a pancake. As an earlier reviewer has stated, the bar balcony was absolutely beautiful and modern and offered great views over the bay. It was a struggle to get served pre dinner drinks sometimes, as waiting staff did not start until later on in the Evening, to coincide with the entertainment I suspect. You had to visit the bar yourself and wait for someone to arrive. The balcony tables were often left dirty, until waiting staff arrived. The Hotel did offer two for one deals on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, from 6.30p.m to 7.30p.m I think. Outside, a pint and a half of lager was anywhere inbetween 4 – 5 euros. THE POOL: On our first 3 or 4 days, we struggled to get decent sunbeds with parasols. May be there were less people in the Hotel for the back end of our holiday and availability increased ? We did witness however, many many guests hogging sunbeds with towels. I have to sadly confirm, that these people were not from a Country with black, red and yellow in their national flag ( and we are not talking Belgium here), but from our own shores. Some of these people felt it appropriate, in certain circumstances, to lay towels on loungers and disappear for 3 – 4 hours. Selfish ! My Wife and I decided that if you cant beat them, you have to join them. So just before breakfast, we would lay 2 towels down and return within 20 minutes, having eaten our toast. We didn’t think this was taking the mickey too much. The temperature of the pool was pretty o.k. Not too bad once you got your shoulders under. TRIPS: We booked with the Hotel Thompson rep, to go on the Golden mile tour. This is a coach trip to Marbella and Puerto Banus. It is charged at 27 euros each and the coach arrives at 10.30a.m and drops you off about 4.15p.m It’s a nice little trip, that allows you somewhere around 1.45 minutes at each location, to stroll at your own leisure and do want you want. Orange Tree Square at Marbella was stunning ! OUT AND ABOUT LOCALLY: The local road outside the hotel is like one of our dual carriageways, but on a smaller scale and apparently slower. It’s a main artery that runs the length of that coast. Its busy, loud and dangerous and neither of us liked crossing over it. That said, new pedestrian lights close to the Hotel, had been installed before we left. Opposite the hotel, are a small selection of Bars and Restaurants, including the Indian Restaurant Noor Mahal, which I will also review. To the eye, this small terrace of buildings was slightly unsightly, more becoming of a shanty town. Ten minutes away by foot is the harbour, where you will struggle to find Sky Sports pubs, Lean to`s and Yorkshire pud provision. A more upmarket experience altogether. Most probably a little bit more pricey than the afore mentioned, but an option all the same. WEATHER: It has to be said, wall to wall sunshine. About 30 degrees I believe daily. Almost guaranteed. Brilliant ! HOTEL VERDICT: Despite the nasty road outside, the Hotel does enjoy a decent location, especially for the promenade and its Harbour and also for local Bars and Restaurants. The Hotel has recently been refurbished to a modern and high standard, but in my humble and discreet opinion, would struggle to make a 4 star grading in England. It has serious issues with its food and beverages and small elements of service. Would we return again ? For a cheeky week in the Winter, chilling around the pool, most probably. Two weeks in the main Summer holiday – not for us. I hope this helps you. Many Thanks Gary.More

Great hotel

Was a very clean hotel, rooms were big and great air conditioning. Fridge wasn,t that cool the drinks we put in were ice cold but when I came to drink it was just cool so don,t waste your money on it .Pool was great and always found a sun lounger although they did say no one can leave towels on them but as alway there was them that got up at the crack of dawn to leave their towels. Entertainment was a bit naff really although Danny and Laura were good at their job.Food was a bit repetitive and was luke warm and drinks were expensive.More

good hotel for "gluten free" people.

Just came back from a week at the Riviera hotel, must say the hotel is very good, rooms big, clean and all with sea view.the food is good with all you could ask for breakfast and plenty of choice in the evening with a live cooking station. The pool area is spacious and we did not have any trouble getting a bed all week. The position of the hotel is good, right on the promenade which goes for about 5 miles. The entertainment at the hotel was ok but there are several bars near if you like a change.Opposite the hotel you can get a bottle of san migel for 1 euro or a pint for 1.5 euro. nice relaxing pleace, no screaming kids balls or dodging lilos. Will go back to this hotel.More

good service

first impressions that they really done well with there refurbishment very smart we like the colours seamed to keep it cool, the rooms were very good but the floor boards do creek at night which is a bit bad if you have to get up 2/3 times at night but apart from that fine the fridge is not a proper one only to keep drinks in and not cold enough for food so don't waste your money on it . .breakfast was fine but the evening was not always that hot and limited choice, staff service very good. We found the pool area ok with always some spare beds somewhere and other areas can be used. The entertainment was not that good except Thursday night best act we seen shame other nights was not up to the same, Danny and Laura really done well every like them worked really hard and done a great job [well done }.over all it is a nice hotel with very good service but time you add on 300 euros at least or more if you do other trips/food and drinks can be a bit expense ,we prefer all-inclusive so you know were you stand with keep finding more money for other things.More
