What makes Thomson Couples special?

This new addition to the Thomson Couples collection is being made-over for summer 2013 to include a new wellness area, a speciality restaurant, and stylish new premium rooms.
Ahead of a top-to-toe makeover, the Hotel Riviera has made it into the exclusive Thomson Couples collection for summer 2013. The hotel's location, next to the Bendalmadena marina, won't change, but there's plenty else that will.

Bedrooms will be completely refurbished, with parquet flooring, plump mattresses, and new LED lighting. And, for the first time, the hotel will offer premium rooms, which will come with hydro-massage baths. What’s more, every room will have sound-proof double glazing, so good nights’ sleep should be easy to come by.

The pool area will remain the same, but the gardens will get a bit of a re-vamp, with new sunloungers, gazebos and Bali beds. On top of this, the hotel's existing health club will be upgraded into a stylish wellness area with a hydro-massage swimming pool, hammam, Jacuzzi and massage cubicles.

Finally, a new a la carte restaurant will be developed, pushing the total number of eateries up to 2. The main buffet restaurant, which is in line for a makeover, will be complemented by a new Mediterranean and international eatery, plus there'll be an al fresco dining area in the summer months, which includes a tapas buffet.

Your guide to Benalmadena, Costa Del Sol

“Benalmadena is a tale of two towns, mixing a sleek marina with down-to-earth Brit pubs and cafes – not to mention every tourist attraction going.”

Tucked between Fuengirola and Torremolinos, Benalmadena is a lively seaside town that’s a real hit with Brits. Looks-wise it’s a bit of mish-mash - 1970s high-rises give way to a pretty whitewashed marina that takes its cue from Moorish Andalucia. Packed with millionaires’ yachts, the marina sits at the very the heart of Benalmadena’s social scene. With no shortage of bars and restaurants, you’ll definitely be coming back here most evenings to mingle with holidaymakers over a couple of cocktails, or to get ready for a night on the tiles with the clubbing kids from nearby Malaga. If you’re after karaoke and a touch of disco glitter, however, head up to Benalmadena’s aptly-named 24-hour square. Nightlife aside, the big draw here is the beach. The 700-metre stretch of sand-and-shingle runs parallel to the town’s raised promenade and coastal road. When you’ve had enough towel time, you’ll find plenty of on-the-water action in the form of jet-skis and parasailing. Away from the sea, there’s plenty more to explore. Paloma Park is all landscaped gardens, lakes and peacocks. Tivoli World funfair is packed with rides and attractions. And the Sea Life centre is a great interactive aquarium. For a dash of culture, there’s Benalmadena Pueblo – the town’s old whitewashed village. And what with Malaga, Granada and Seville all within striking distance, you’re covered on the sightseeing front, too.

My wife and I returned to the Riviera for our annual autumn holiday. This hotel has the most glorious view from the pool deck and from the rooms on the pool side. However, if you are a sun lover the other side of the hotel is best as you get sunshine... more on this review
