Read more about Platinum

With a top-notch setting and an eye for style, this classic-meets-contemporary hotel has a lot to offer.
With its striking sea views and turreted pavilion-esque design, this place makes a good impression from the off. Step inside, and the architecture is just as grand. The conservatory-style lounge is a case in point, with its huge glass ceiling and polished marble floors.

Elsewhere, the sleek, modern look continues thanks to a recent refurb. Head to the main restaurant and you’ll find a theatrical-style dining spot, with high-backed red velvet chairs and dramatic red and gold drapes. Here you can tuck into a pan-global buffet with on-the-spot cooking stations serving up fresh-from-the-pan dishes.

On the bedroom front, the look is more classic – think light pastels teamed with dark wood furniture. And satellite TVs, air-conditioning and minibars also come as part of the package.

Outside, there’s a smart pool area with a generous supply of loungers, a large swimming pool, and a mini version for the kids. And if you venture through the dunes opposite the hotel, you’ll end up on a huge strip of golden sand within a couple of minutes.

Beyond the beach, there’s a lot more to explore. A short stroll will take you to a handful of bars and restaurants at the harbour nearby.

Your guide to Isla Canela, Costa De La Luz

"Nuzzling the Portuguese border, this small island offers empty, virgin sands, gentle waters and a laid-back atmosphere perfect for getting away from it all."

Mad about beaches? Then this island in the western Costa De La Luz will put a grin on your face as wide as a Cheshire cat. Sporting seven kilometres of unspoilt sands, it’s nirvana for beach fans. Here, you’ll find some of the whitest, finest sands in Spain, kissed by calm Atlantic waters and backed by attractive residential complexes, rolling dunes and pine forests. Plus there’s plenty of space, so if you want to abandon your sun lounger for a private patch all to yourself, no problem. And last but not least, there’s very little to intrude on your love-in with the sun. Still fairly undeveloped, the beaches here are pretty much devoid of in-your-face facilities and crowds.

Away from the sands, the hotels and apartments merge into a shiny new marina. Here, pull up a chair and sip a ‘café con leche’ whilst watching the comings and goings of the sleek yachts and motor boats. Pop into a shop to pick up some provisions or a new T-shirt for the beach.

Or for serious browsing, take the bridge to Ayamonte on the mainland. This charming Spanish town is well worth exploring, with its pedestrianised, flower-filled streets, palm-lined waterfront and weekly market. And by night, if Canela’s hotel-based entertainments don’t excite you, then let Ayamonte steal the show with its animated restaurants ideal for relaxed starlit dinners and drinks.

Back at base though, don’t miss Isla Canela’s magnificent 18-hole golf course peppered with orange and eucalyptus trees. Or enjoy a truly memorable day out, visiting Seville. Just an hour away by road, the Andalucian capital brims with magnificent history and a flamenco-fuelled zest for life that’s totally irresistible. And for a slice of Portuguese cuisine and culture, join a cruise along the Guadiana River, and bag yourself two countries for the price of one!
