Guide to Santa Susana

'What you see is what you get in Santa Susanna – a modern, cosmopolitan beach resort with a traditional old town next door.'

Less lively than Lloret, Santa Susanna is just the ticket if you're after an away-from-it-all Spanish holiday. The beach itself is of coarse sand and offers good swimming and watersports, while the promenade is lined with shops, bars, restaurants and fast food outlets. In the summer there's a craft market every afternoon. And on Tuesdays the weekly market has stalls piled high with local produce, including fresh fruit and vegetables. Pick up some postcards to send home. Fill up on fresh fish at a beachside restaurant. Or liven up your lemonade with a slice - fresh from the market's lemon mountains. Nightlife-wise, it doesn't have anywhere near the buzz for which Lloret has become famous. But there are plenty of friendly bars, along with a few clubs for the more dedicated party animals, plus there are a few more options in the neighbouring resort of Malgrat de Mar. What's more, alongside all these 'fun in the sun' features, the added bonus in Santa Susanna is the old town, which has quaint, cobbled streets, ancient walls, traditional whitewashed houses and a big dollop of Catalonian charm. It's also got several authentic Catalan restaurants where you might tickle your tastebuds with a seafood zarzuela or tuck into some tasty butifarra sausage. As for days out, there are a number of interesting places to visit in the area, including the castle at Palafolls, the Marineland dolphinarium at Blanes and the amazing monastery perched high on the mountain of Montserrat. Alternatively, hop on the train to Barcelona, where you can marvel at the stunning Gaudi architecture and enjoy a cup of coffee and some people watching in the charming Las Ramblas district.
