Guide to Gerona

'Glowing with honey-coloured houses and lined with historical buildings, this traditional town oozes beauty and tranquillity.'

If you're looking for a traditional slice of Spanish life, the romantic city of Gerona is the perfect getaway. A hotbed for history, its medieval heart remains delightfully preserved and you can almost feel the eras unfold as you wander along its ancient streets. Dating back to the Roman period, this walled city is a treasure trove of sights just waiting to be discovered. Easy to explore on foot, start at the Passeig Arqueologic where the walls begin, and pass the Banys Arabs or Arabic baths and the Eiffel-designed Pont de les Peixateries Bridge. Wander down to the River Onyar, which splits the city into two. Here, you'll find 19th-century pastel-painted houses jostling for space along the banks and chaotic tangles of cobbled streets snaking off in every direction. Even if history's not your thing, don't miss the magnificent Gothic cathedral with its 1680 baroque facade and graceful Romanesque cloister. There are hosts of museums, but if you have to choose one, head for the Jewish museum in the Centre Bonastruc ca Porta. Built on the site of a 15th-century synagogue, it tells the story of the Jews expulsion in 1492. Follow in their footsteps in the Call, the old Jewish district - its labyrinthine streets are still breathtakingly beautiful. Get in the swing of the cafe culture around La Rambla de la Libertad where you can switch between paveside people watching and shopping in the chic boutiques. You'll also find great one-off shops in the bustling old quarter where you can buy local wines, cheeses and ceramics, which make great gifts to take home. As night falls, pull up a pew at one of Gerona's restaurants where foodies are spoilt for choice. From French-influenced fare to speciality Catalan cuisine - your taste buds are in for a treat.
