"For the perfect seaside escape in a delightful Catalan setting, Tossa de Mar welcomes you with open arms."
Stretching from the border with France to the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, the Costa Brava is a procession of rocky coastline sprinkled with gorgeous sandy bays and irresistibly secluded coves.
Inside the party towns, Lloret De Mar for example, holidaymakers are catered for with a huge array of restaurants serving both local and international food, bustling bars and world-class clubs that indulge the urge to party from dusk to dawn. But not all towns on the Costa Brava are the same. In Tossa de Mar you'll experience something delightfully different. A glimpse of the traditional old Costa Bravian way of life is still visible in the knot of narrow streets and quaint, stone houses. You'll soon see why this beauty spot has attracted so many artists and painters over the years. And when you want to kick back and relax, the gently sloping cashmere-soft beaches that sink into the sun-warmed waters are a great starting place. When you want to stretch your legs, pull on some sturdy shoes and get up close to the coast's spectacular fragrant pine forests that soften the rugged outline of the characteristic hills. And with a little exploration, it's easy to find yourself an undiscovered spot beside the sea for an afternoon's bathing and sun-basking, or in a secret place in the woodlands for a leisurely picnic. Be sure to take locally-produced cheese, bread, chorizo, olives and wine – and a doze in the cool shade of the trees. With a good selection of hotels, restaurants and low key amenities, to boot, Tossa de Mar makes a great choice for a summer escape away from the crowds.

The excellent, fine-shingle, crescent-shaped beach is very popular and has a true Mediterranean atmosphere. Families potter along the shore and bright parasols line up neatly above the gentle waves. Watersports and boat trips are available.
Stroll between tapas bars enjoying a drink and a snack before relaxing over your evening meal. Mouth-watering local specialities include suquet de peix, a substantial fish stew, or llagosta i pollastre, made with lobster and chicken in a nut sauce. The vineyards in the foothills of the Pyrenees produce some excellent sparkling and petillant wines.
Nightlife is quite low-key but there are a number of music bars and discos, and plenty of waterside cafes, where you can enjoy the views and relax over a beer.
Some tempting craft shops, especially good for handmade pottery and Spanish art, with some very stylish boutiques in the town centre.
The town's museum is well worth a visit, with some superb paintings by Chagall. Visit Barcelona to explore the fascinating Gothic Quarter and see Gaudi's unfinished Sagrada Familia.
