Families... A must read

We've just returned (me, wife and 7yr old son) from 11 nights at the wonderful Magic Villa Del Mar hotel in Benidorm. Ok so there will be two reviews, why, will become clear... Firstly the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and were always friendly and polite. A special thank you must go out to Jose at the poolside bar... Working in unbearable heat with no air conditioning (come on hotel management give the guy a break) he was always friendly and ensured the kids were well hydrated and under shade when it was too hot. He is a credit to your hotel and deserves a special mention. The food was also fantastic with a great choice, always happy to offer my son something else if there wasn't something he liked. The alcohol on offer was all branded and of top quality. Can't fault any of the food / drink choices... BRILLIANT. Ok so why two reviews. Well Magic Villa Del Mar pride themselves on being a family hotel and whilst on paper it could be true in reality it doesn't work. The rooms were great but expecting kids to sleep on a pull out sofa bed hardly constitutes 4*. I tried it out to see if my wife and i could sleep on it but it was so uncomfortable we decided to stay in our two single beds which were pushed together. Again, not ideal. The family pool is in my view somewhat of an afterthought and is separated from the main pool which is on another level up a flight of stairs... Not a problem but the kids pool has two large steps for kids / toddlers to negotiate whilst getting into and out of the pool. It's a accident waiting to happen. The kids slide with it's water bucket is a great idea, but the water bucket was never on and thus rendered the kids pool pretty useless. The pool upstairs was 5ft deep with no shallow end so people with kids beware; you need eyes like hawks around this pool. There was a kids club or at least I think there was as a door with a "kids Club" sign was on it... Trouble is, throughout the whole of our stay that door remained locked and as far as i could tell may as well be used as a store room. Whilst the staff tried their best with kids entertainment, face painting at 23:00 doesn't really constitute entertainment. The downstairs area cries out for a pool table or table football as 95% of the time the place is empty. Attempts where made with some entertainment but it was so poorly advertised that we barely knew it was on... The Balcony bar, what a place that is... Fantastic panoramic views of Benidorm with fantastic cocktails and comfy chairs... However 4 days into our stay management decided that after 22:30 this was to be an adults only area. Slightly annoying as it's a "family hotel" and there was no mention of this prior to booking. All the kids when we were up there were very well behaved and sat down playing with their tablets... Obviously there had been a complaint about children being up there and i get that to a certain extent if they were running about being unruly... However this wasn't the case. The way in which this announcement was managed with a few hastily printed out pieces on A4 stuck to a wall isn't right. Come on Villa del Mar management a note under each room door would have been better and certainly would have prevented our embarrassment of being kicked out at 23:00 as they didn't see my son sitting next to me. In reality though i kind of get the 22:30 rule... A nice place for Adults to chill out whilst the kids are entertained downstairs... But remember folks, no real entertainment for them downstairs... Oh and the adults only rule only seems to apply to kids under 10... Many families with teenagers where allowed to stay up on the balcony.... Come on, one rule applies across the board surely? Ok so the second part of the review is based on it being an adult’s only hotel. For this i would certainly give it a 5* rating... As mentioned above the food on offer was to a high standard, great choice and perfectly presented. The staff were courteous and always ensured drinks were topped up when necessary and you were generally made to feel special. The pool whilst small was perfect for relaxing and Jose was a fantastic host and always available to server drinks. The balcony bar area was such a great place to go after dinner to have drinks and chat to fellow guests. Such a relaxing place to spend the evenings. Even the outside bar area downstairs was great to have drinks and watch people go by... Evening entertainment? So what, you have Benidorm's new town 20 mins walk away with all the entertainment you will ever need, sitting downstairs in a windowless bar isn't where I’d want to be entertained. So all in all a great place to come on holiday, but with kids? We asked several families would they come back to the hotel and sadly they just didn't think there was enough for the kids... The same question was asked to some couples only ... Guess what, they'd come back again for sure. So there you have it, whilst i could happily give Villa del Mar a 5* if it was just me and the wife i can only give it a 3* for families... I heard a rumour that Magic Villa Del Mar gained its 4* plus rating whilst we were there... Hard to justify that to be honest. Great hotel, staff and facilities but you are just trying to be something you are not. Stick to adults only and you can't go wrong.More

Anneliese P,

Sanctuary!

Always wanted to go to Benidorm but i a tasteful way. This hotel does just that. Had a sea view room which was delightful. Food was fresh and lots too choose from. Beach on the door step, no getting up early to put your towels out, drinks on the beach from the hotel bar (in plastic cups!), and to top off the hardworking day of sunbathing the chill out terrace bar for a cocktail. What more can you ask for ! See you in July 2017 ! Thank you Villa Del MarMore

Nice hotel, don't leave things in your room!

I stayed at the hotel with approx 40 friends and family for a wedding. The hotel is situated across the road from the beach and our room had a lovely sea view. Everything was as you would expect, however after check out and on the return journey home I realised I had left 2 pairs of shoes in the room. Friends who had not checked out of the hotel asked staff for the room to be checked, to be quickly told the shoes were not there by reception staff. Later in the day the staff were asked again if they had been handed in, they hadn't. Several emails to the hotel since my return and nobody has had the courtesy to reply. More
