El Paraíso Escondido

in El Gastor , Andalucia

  • Located at the foot of the Lagarín Ridge
  • Stylish and spacious
  • Ideal for couples
A glorious cluster of cottages for couples offering a splendid retreat in delightful countryside.
The spectacular setting of Los Algarrobales and the dedication to comfort and style displayed by its owner, Michel, have made this rural hideaway a firm favourite with Simply fans. From their enviable spot at the foot of the Lagarín Ridge, El Paraiso Escondido’s four cottages make a tranquil bolthole.

With their wood-fired chimneys, there’s a real Mediterranean ambience inside the spacious open-plan cottages. Honey-coloured pine furniture matches the sunny yellow décor perfectly. And modern extras like four-poster beds, satellite TV and air-conditioning don’t in any way spoil their traditional feel. They also come with superbly equipped kitchens with a full range of appliances and CD players. Plus each one has a private terrace which looks over the sizeable, shared swimming pool. And they’re cleverly positioned to make the most of the sun.

The setting is a paradise for bird-lovers. Lagarín Ridge is home to a colony of griffon vultures and short-toed and Bonnelli eagles. There have even been sightings of a pair of golden eagles, and the ridge also receives the occasional visit from the famous Cabra Montes or mountain goat from the nearby Sierra de Algodonales.

Your guide to El Gastor, Andalucia

“If you’re looking for the authentic atmosphere of a sleepy Andalucian mountain village, El Gastor is the cat’s whiskers.”

Traditional Andalucia is a different kettle of fish from the buzzing beach life of the Costa Del Sol. It’s a world of stunning scenery, dotted with dinky white-washed villages, fragrant citrus groves and sparkling rivers. And you can’t get more typical of this captivating corner of the globe than El Gastor. The local area is largely undiscovered by tourism, so you’ll be able to enjoy a generous helping of peace and quiet along with the views. But there’s also a sprinkling of shops, bars and restaurants, so you won’t feel completely isolated. The order of the day is generally to relax and enjoy the relaxed pace of life, not to mention tucking in to local delicacies like serrano ham and juicy green olives. If you’re into nature, you’ll be in your element. El Gastor is on the edge of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, famous for its spectacular limestone landscape of cliffs, caves, gullies and gorges. Do some rambling and you might catch a glimpse of eagles or griffon vultures soaring around the hilltops. And if you haven’t overdosed on eye-catching scenery, it’s definitely worth a trip out to nearby Zahara de la Sierra, an unbelievably gorgeous little hillside village, overlooked by a ruined Moorish castle. Then, of course, there’s nearby Ronda, one of Spain’s oldest and most beautiful towns, dramatically set either side of a cavernous gorge.
