They call it the ‘Dining Room of the Costa del Sol’. But the charming village of Benahavis has more to offer than a feast of fine food. With no less than nine of the courses in the vicinity, it’s also a paradise for golfers. Not to mention the stunning mountain scenery. And then there’s the up-market beach resorts of Puerto Banus and Marbella just a stones’ throw away. With all this on offer, it’s not difficult to see why this Andalucian hideaway is the perfect choice for those who like to be close to the action but not in the thick of it. The first thing you notice here won’t be the pretty white-washed houses or even the stunning backdrop of the La Serrania de Ronda peaks. It will be the huge selection of eateries. This place is a Utopia for foodies, with around 20 first-class restaurants plus a gaggle of tapas bars. Most serve authentic Spanish fare, but you can get anything from an omelette to a curry here. But before dinner, the favourite pastime is browsing the craft shops and galleries. And if you fancy upping the dose of retail therapy, Puerto Banus has designer boutiques by the bucket-load - as well as a branch of the famous El Corte Ingles department store. As for sightseeing, the area around Benahavis has plenty to offer. Nearby Montemayor has an 11th century castle with superb views of the coast. And there are acres and acres of wonderful countryside to explore, including the beautiful rugged landscapes of the Parque Natural de la Sierra de las Nieves, a few miles north near Ronda.
