Estalagem Do Vale

Estalagem do Vale is a hotel inn in the north of the island developed from an 18th-century manor house, carefully renovated and extended to maintain its original shape. Its colourful history has seen the estalagem serve as both a temporary hospital and a school in centuries past. Today it offers a comfortable retreat in this most rugged and beautiful of island landscapes with modern facilities for relaxing, dining and sports.
Its isolated setting enhances the tranquility and natural beauty of the area with its sweeping horizons, the deep blue shimmers of the Atlantic, the enormous mountains and lush splendour of the Sao Vicente Valley. Independent travellers and naturelovers will be in their element here.

Visitors first began flocking to the north of Madeira in the latter half of the 19th century, among them wealthy Britons, which explains why a cricket pitch, coaching inns and a croquet lawn appeared somewhat incongruously on this Atlantic isle. The croquet lawn still survives at this very hotel. Local tradition maintains that the Estalagem do Vale was always held in high esteem by these early tourists.
