Madeira is not known for its beaches, but holidays in Ribeira Brava are a different story. In 2004, the town created its own man made stretch of sand, with a prom to boot, making Ribeira Brava one of the few traditional seaside resorts on the island. There's also a huge jetty that juts out into the sea, creating a safe swimming area protected from wave surges. So, your Ribeira Brava holiday can give you the best of both worlds: Madeiran charm and the classic fun-in-the-sun summer holidays package.
Ribeira Brava is a low key resort with accommodation mostly being in guest houses. So, while it's generally good value, it's not usually the sort place where you pick up discount holidays or late deals. If you feel like being within easy reach of the beach, but also close to nature, the Hotel Pousada Dos Vinhaticos is a good choice. Located in the mountains behind Ribeira Brava, it's great for keen walkers. And when you get back after a hard day's rambling, there's a superb restaurant where you can 'carb up' with some hearty Portuguese cuisine.
Apart from the beach, Ribeira Brava's main attraction is its shopping. With the best range of stores outside Funchal, it's a great place to pick up some souvenirs. Mind you, when you first arrive you may think there's only a handful of retail outlets. But don't be fooled. Many are shops disguised as houses. And you'll also find mini-malls with just one shop front on the street.
