Set high up on the hills, the Pestana complex goes all out to impress. Made up of the Pestana Miramar and Pastana Village, you need only venture into the shared lobby to see the quality both have to offer. It’s a traditionally stylish look with a cobbled-effect marble floor, plenty of light and an old-oak-style front desk. Complemented by classical paintings and flanked by a lounge area of Art Nouveau furniture and Chesterfield leather chairs, it sets the tone for things to come.

Take the first of three swimming pools. Sitting out front, the large, shimmering expanse provides views over the hillside, past whitewashed buildings and down to the sea. And the surrounding terrace offers a top spot to work on the tan. Plus, you’re surrounded by well-kept gardens where vibrant flowers, palms and the odd gazebo all add to the air of serenity. For those who want to be a bit more active, there’s a choice of things to do – ranging from tennis to billiards.

Another talking point is the food. There are three restaurants to choose from including the Med-inspired MiraMar and Pizzeria Luiggi. Or for a truly rustic setting, try the Adega specialising in Madeiran cuisine. Think strings of garlic bulbs and onions hanging from the ceiling, bottles of wine stacked in honeycomb formation and an old stone counter.

Location-wise, the complex is a few minutes’ walk to the nearest bars and cafés, a 15 minute stroll from the closest clubs and a 10-minute mosey down to the beach – accessed via the Hotel Pestana Carlton Madeira.
