Guide to Canico

"The resort of Canico de Baixo is perched on a small promontory and is located ten kilometres east of Funchal."

The resort of Canico de Baixo is perched on a small promontory and is divided into two distinct areas - the traditional Old Village built around a fine 18th-century church and the main square, and the modern resort area with its stylish villas, hotels and holiday homes. The whole area is perfect for sunbathing and good for hiking, walking and golf - the 18-hole Palheiro Golf Course is a 20 minute drive away. There's a good selection of amenities including restaurants, bars, a mini-market and a bank.

Beaches

There is a small pebbly beach to the east of Canico. If you begin to yearn for sandy beaches, consider taking a trip to Madeira's smaller sister island, Porto Santo, two and a half hours by ferry from Funchal, or a fifteen minute flight from the airport.

Eating out

Dining out in Canico de Baixo predominantly revolves around hotel restaurants, although there are a few independents. Up in the village, there is more choice with mainly fish and international cuisine.

Nightlife

Nightlife is limited to hotel entertainment, although there are a few bars in the village. Head off to Funchal for more variety. There is a regular bus service and taxis are readily available.

Shopping

The shopping opportunities in Canico de Baixo are very limited, but there is more choice in the village above, and even more in Funchal, down the road.

Local information

The walks in the area are spectacular, so follow a levada (irrigation channel), explore the valley and enjoy the abundant semitropical flora. If you are a keen diver, the waters in this area are a veritable divers' paradise - the sea off the south coast of Madeira was declared a national park in 1986.
