Quinta Das Vinhas

The western corner of Madeira is the least developed part of the island, as it is only recent improvements to the road network that have made the area easily accessible. Quinta das Vinhas enjoys a stunningly beautiful and utterly peaceful setting on a slope high above the ocean, surrounded by the seemingly endless vineyards from which the quinta takes its name. The sublime beauty of this 17th-century farmhouse matches that of its rural surroundings. Carefully restored to sacrifice none of its original rustic charm, the delightful interiors of this rambling old house feature floors of flagstone or polished wood, vaulted or beamed wooden ceilings and Portuguese azulejo tiles. The bedrooms in the main house are prettily furnished, and those on the lower floor open straight onto a long terrace facing the garden and swimming pool. Mature oaks line the entrance courtyard and add to the overall feeling of authentic antiquity.
Breakfast is taken around a large, antique table in the cosy dining room with fireplace, and dinner can be arranged if requested in advance. Alternatively, the pretty coastal village of Jardim do Mar and the larger town of Calheta are just a ten-minute drive away. Tempting as it is to just spend your whole time at the quinta relaxing, it also makes an extremely good base for exploring the unspoilt west, the rugged mountainous interior or the north coast. Separate villas in the grounds are an option for those who prefer a self-catering based stay.
