Just west of Albufeira rests the sandy resort of Sao Rafael. Sleepy and relaxing, this pretty place is a collection of tempting beaches. Smooth golden sands. Shimmering blue seas. Steep sandstone cliffs. It's the perfect place to rest alright. The impressive main beach is the resort's sun-soaked centrepiece. A huge, Blue Flag affair, it's scattered with loads of arched rock formations that are particularly handy for hiding from the hot Algarve sun. Another great way to cool off is to dive into the clear blue seas. If you don't want to get too wet, hoist your sail and take out a sailing boat. Or maybe you can fly over the waters on a windsurf. But like we said, that's not the only beach here. A swift ten minute walk will bring you to the beautiful beach of Praia da Castelo. This little gem was named after a ruined castle that's on the headland. Walkers and tourists flock to get an eyeful of the fascinating rock formations. Once you've had the chance to look around, maybe you'll want to indulge in a little retail therapy. There are a few shops dotted around, but as you're so close to Albufeira it's no hassle to hop over for the day. While you're there, pop in one of the many restaurants for a taste of true Portugal. There's plenty of freshly caught fish, which comes highly recommended. Or perhaps pop into a bar for a cocktail or two? Go on, treat yourself."
