Praia da Luz is located 8km west of Lagos. It is a smart, quiet resort which has grown (and is still growing) like a pearl around an oyster - the old fishing village. Fishing - especially octopus potting - was the predominant profession in Praia da Luz until recently. This has now been surpassed by tourism, with national and international travellers being drawn to the resort's sandy beach and beautiful ochre backdrop.
Tourism has been developed with taste and care, blending old with new. The charms and character from yesteryear can be found down every tiny, cobbled street. The cliff tops offer fantastic walks and views - head to the secluded beach of Praia de Porto de Mos for a real treat. Those looking for something a bit more active can partake in numerous watersports - scuba diving and windsurfing are particularly good in this area.

Its large, sandy beach is great for families - the rocky section teems with marine life, which should keep children amused for hours. As the only beach in walking distance, it does get crowded in July and August but it's worth it for the windsurfing, sailing and fishing, with tennis courts and more ashore.
There are numerous traditional restaurants offering excellent, inexpensive seafood, simple salads, crusty bread and local wine. There's also a good cross section of international restaurants available, including Indian, Italian and English.
Beyond the delights of dining and relaxed bars, nightlife is low-key.
Take home some hand-crocheted lace for an authentic souvenir of an unforgettable holiday. Check out the local market which occurs on the first Saturday of every month.
Further afield, but well worth it, are the stunning Monchique Mountains. The area is renowned for its spa water - which the locals will swear has impressive healing qualities.
