Luz Bay, however, will be your nearest centre, and here there's an impressive array of restaurants and bars, many of which overlook the wonderful sweep of sandy beach. Well geared up for both young and older children, the beach has a wide choice of watersports and some interesting rock pools to investigate. Luz Bay is mostly a modern resort which has been attractively designed with low rise villas and apartments and appealing cobbled streets, where flowers add great splashes of colour. For history and sight seeing, you can't beat Lagos, just 10 minutes away, where street artists perform throughout the summer months in the picturesque, winding lanes of the old town. You should also visit the delightful town of Silves, 20 minutes drive to the east, with its impressive castle dominating the town. Golfers have a choice of four top courses, all between 5 and 30 minutes away, and if you are finding the summer heat a bit much, then escape to the Monchique Mountains where the air is cooler and you can picnic in shady pine forests. Of course, if your children have anything to do with it, they'll choose another way to cool off – a 20 minute trip to the waterpark where chutes, flumes and fountains should do the trick!
