Cerca de Cima

in Monchique , Algarve

  • Secluded hillside retreat
  • Shaded and charming dining terrace
  • Wonderful countryside views
This rustic country cottage benefits from amazing countryside views.
Tucked away on a wooded hillside, Cerca da Cima looks out over the ocean and hills dotted with small villages. There’s a really relaxed feel about this former pub. For one, it’s surrounded by greenery. Vines corkscrew around the trellis, an ancient fig tree spreads its canopy across the verandah and a flower garden surrounds the stone bathing pool. This, by the way, has been cleverly created from the former cistern, so it’s not huge but pretty nonetheless.

Simple and pretty on the outside, it’s just as lovely inside. Colourful covers and painted bedsteads offset whitewashed walls in the bedrooms. In the living room, floral prints combine with rustic wood and mellow terracotta. But the country cottage charm hasn’t been kept at the expense of creature comforts – the bathroom is marble and the kitchen well fitted.

Life can be as quiet and peaceful here as you want, but you’re not as remote as you feel. Shops and restaurants are within easy reach because road access, still narrow enough to deter the curious, has brought this beautiful area into closer touch with Monchique, less than four kilometres away.

Your guide to Monchique, Algarve

“Sensational views, mountain walks and pine forests – if that sounds like your type of holiday then let Monchique work its magic on you.”

Drive up the winding road to Monchique and you’ll catch the heady fragrance of pine, eucalyptus and mimosa from the woodland-cloaked hills. This sets the scene for one refreshingly rural holiday. Perched on the hillside, this is a market town in the true sense of the word. Every fortnight the local market transforms the town, with locals selling handicrafts and ceramics alongside regional hams and farmers’ produce. Look out too for the wooden chairs with a distinctive cross back which have been made around here since Roman times. Give your wallet a rest in the shady main square. Pull up a pew in one of the restaurants and sample some mountain dishes. Admire the pretty, white Parish church with its striking Manueline doorway. Or take one of the spectacular walks through orange orchards and pines to the peak of Picota – the views are amazing. Just down the road, the popular little spa resort of Caldas de Monchique is tucked into the valley. Once the bolt-hole of late 19th century, wealthy Spaniards coming here to take the waters, this pretty little village has now been restored to its former glory. Wander in and out of the boutiques and cafés, picnic beneath the pines, or walk up the valley alongside a burbling stream to the church or the spring. Bliss.
