Casa Cerejeira

The forests around Monchique are a verdant mix of tall eucalypts, scented pines and sturdy cork trees, and tucked away in a little green valley amongst these is the delightfully romantic Casa Cerejeira, nestling in the shade of swaying boughs at the end of a 800m track. The owners of The Stone House and Villa Golfinos have refurbished this charming salmon-pink house with a great deal of sensitivity and added a small mosaic-tiled pool in the front, bordered by wild flowers. The whitewashed stone walls keep the attractive wood-beamed interiors refreshingly cool and the use of pretty fabrics and the terracotta-tiled floors make the cottage a truly inviting retreat.
A small kitchen and bathroom lead off the open plan living-dining room, with a set of steps descending to the double bedroom below which looks over the green valley of citrus and cork trees. A barbecue and terrace complete the rural idyll.
Trails lead through the trees past small farmsteads and cork plantations where stripped bark piles up in mounds. Monchique, a ten-minute drive away, is an easily reached destination for dinner, whilst the road winding up to Foia offers restaurant terraces with splendid views over the forests towards the coastal plain below. Alternatively, if you have stocked up on fresh local produce, you may choose not to leave Casa Cerejeira very often at all.
