Guide to Luz Bay

Although Luz Bay was once an old fishing village, it's now predominantly a modern resort, but no less appealing for that. You'll still tread flower-filled cobbled streets, and admire the low-rise white villas and apartments with red-tiled roofs scattered around the bay. The mood is quiet and relaxed – no crazy nightlife, no loud music – just beach lovers and families chilling out on holiday. The warren of streets running down to the beach has restaurants, bars and shops aplenty, and in the evening you can sit under the palms on the promenade enjoying your meal overlooking the beach. Who knows, the children might even be tempted onto the beach so that you can keep an eye on them and enjoy a glass of wine in peace at the same time! The lovely beach is gently shelving and normally calm, although occasionally the waves roll in and you can get out your body board. Backed by pretty, multicoloured sandstone cliffs, one end of the beach is rocky and great for rock pooling. To east and west you can walk along the spectacular cliffs towards Lagos or Burgau. Back in the village, visit the Fortaleza - an old fort with a wonderful west-facing restaurant terrace, and keep your eyes open for Roman remains which are dotted here and there. There are no less than four golf courses nearby, as well as tennis and riding in the resort. Lagos, just five kilometres away, is a fabulous town with attractive winding streets lined with shops and restaurants, as well as several beaches and an old fort to discover – don't miss it!
