Algarve

Award-winning destination

The Algarve is a regular winner at the World Travel Awards – the travel industry’s answer to the Oscars. In fact, over the years, it’s taken home accolades for everything from its fabulous diving and great golf resorts to its thrilling attractions and sweeping beaches.

Standout coastline

If there’s one category this part of Portugal really deserves gold for, it’s the beaches. Hidden coves, crescent-shaped bays and rocky inlets make up the Algarve’s coastline. Most of the pale sands are child-friendly, plus many come with Blue Flag credentials.

Popular Albufeira

When it comes to places to stay, Albufeira leads the pack. The Algarve’s largest holiday spot, it’s a tale of two resorts. Its new town has a lively strip of thumping nightclubs and open-air bars, while the old town is filled with cobbled squares, colourful market stalls and al fresco restaurants.

The best of the rest

Just down the road from Albufeira is Olhos d’Agua, a sleepy fishing village with cobbled lanes and traditional restaurants. On the beach, freshwater springs bubble through the sands and there are rock pools great for little ones. Finally, there’s Sao Rafael, which is famous for its dramatic rock formations and Blue Flag beach.

Alvor

With narrow cobbled streets leading to the harbour, and its own lagoon and river, Alvor radiates old-world charm. Not only that, it’s got some of the best restaurants in the western Algarve, as well as music bars to keep you entertained at night. And the beaches are pretty charming, too – all golden sand, warm waters and sheltered spots.

Olhos D'Agua

Olhos D’Agua is on the central Algarve, backdropped by the region’s signature sandstone cliffs. It’s an easygoing fishing village where you’ll see fishermen hauling in their catch ready to be barbecued at the friendly restaurants later that night. There are lots of eating places and bars along the main street that runs down the hill to the waterfront – where you’ll find a lovely little beach.

Lagos

Lagos is a popular town in the Barlavento region of the Algarve. Good surfing and relaxed beaches attract laid-back outdoor types, but the old town’s 16th-century walls and Arab-built castle keep architecture-lovers happy, too. There’s also a large marina with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.

Albufeira

Albufeira is the place that put the Algarve on the map. The picturesque old town teems with pavement cafes and boutiques, and the modern resort is lined by a main strip, which sparks into action at sundown. The whole scene is framed by a 30-kilometre coastline of unspoilt beaches and little bays.

Vilamoura

Vilamoura is an all-in-one seaside town in Portugal’s Algarve region. Life revolves around the huge marina that’s filled with million-pound yachts and lined with elegant bars and authentic Portuguese restaurants. You’ve got some history here, too, courtesy of the town’s Roman ruins. And it’s all neatly packaged between protected wetlands to the north and a long strip of sand to the south.
