Proud owner of a ‘Leading Hotels of the World’ tag, the Vila Vita has got luxury written all over it. Set in quiet sub-tropical grounds, it looks down over a strip of its very own sand. And hiding away among crowds of palms, are two lovely pools accessorised with sun loungers, parasols and canopied day beds.

As you’d expect from a 5 star hotel, the facilities here are first class. On the sports side, there are Astroturf tennis courts, a 9-hole pitch and putt course and a state-of-the-art gym. In the water you can have a go at sailing, canoeing and windsurfing.

If relaxation is your priority, head for the health club. Not only does it have its own indoor and outdoor pools, there are also extras like whirlpool baths and an orange-scented steam room. Plus a lengthy list of spa treatments.

The Vila Vita bends over backwards to keep its younger guests smiling. There’s an 18-hole crazy golf course, an oversized playground and a football pitch. As for Annabella’s Kids' Park, it’s a cut above the usual holiday clubs with activities like baking, fashion modelling, mini-Olympics and magic shows. Even hard-to-please teens are looked after with offerings like surf lessons and excursions to waterparks and jeep safaris.

As for the Vila Vita itself, it’s rather like a sumptuous Moorish palace – all mosaic floors, hand-painted walls and grand archways. And the dining set-up is just as impressive. Nine restaurants fight for your attention, including the rustic Portuguese ‘Adega’ eatery and the Moorish-style ‘Aladin Grill’ with its beautiful stained-glass windows.
