This place gives you stylish rooms, a couple of pools and a spa. And it’s right by a sandy beach.
Pestana Dom Joao II is just a stone’s throw from the soft sands of Praia d’Alvor. It’s also only a 10-minute walk to the town’s main square, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars.
Inside, rooms are ultra-modern – think neutral décor and rainfall showers in the bathrooms. They all come with a balcony or terrace. Plus, some have a sea view so they’re perfect for watching sunsets.

Stayed for 10 nights at this lovely hotel which is set on a beautiful beach. Our room was nice with a very comfortable bed, tea & coffee making facilities would have been a good idea though. The breakfast was really good but you have to queue for quite a while if you want fried eggs, the evening meals would have been better if there had been more choice. The safe & aircontioning are free which is a bonus. There is a very large pool with plenty of sun beds, we never had a problem at any time of the day. We walked into Alvor village on the boardwalk where there are lots of good restaurants & bars. The location of the hotel is so beautiful & peaceful, we will definitely be returning.More

Let down by Food and High Prices !!
I stayed with family, there were 7 of us, the staff did not really help when we wanted our tables joined together. They managed to do this for a few days out of 14 but that was it. The first week a large bottle of water to have with dinner was $3.70, then on the second week this increased to $4.00??? The bar was empty probably due to such high prices and the entertainment was depressing and seriously bad. So most evening we took a taxi or walked into Alvor. The Hotel is modern and clean, both inside and outside pool areas very nice but NO Lifeguard which I think is dangerous. You stepped out right onto the beach was was beautiful, with a boardwalk right into Alvor. I spent One day on the beach and was shocked when I was charged $10 to stay on one sunbed for the day!!! The prices and food were bad, the food was not hot or tasty, seriously need a new chef who knows how to make tasty food, plus smoke often pouring out from the grill area filling the room! Such a let down when they could make it such a Great place if the were to make the food hot, and not repeat the menu each week! The cleaners came in everyday and it was always clean with fresh towels and sheets. Plus after reading all the other bad review, it shows the Hotel commitment when a standard reply is posted out to all !!! Seriouslu needs some improvement.More

So close but not quite right
Just returned from a stay at the Dom Joao II, and but for a hapeth of tar.. Hotel beautiful, pools great, staff really good on the whole. But then we come to the rest.. canteen in the evening cold food chef unable to make any small alterations on request, for example making omlettes would a fried egg be possible the answer was an uncomprimising No !!! Then we come to the drinks and the cost really €4.00 for a bottle of water, same can be purchase within a 100yards for €0.70. And in fact at the start of the week it was €3.70. The bar was no better does not take a genius to notice you can get the same service in town and a better drink for half the cost hence the bar is empty. Come on get this right and you have a gold mine (maybe look at the entertainment, a couple of the acts were average the rest worse hence with the price of a drink the area is empty). I would strongly recommend booking B&B and getting a quality meal in town for the evening just do not ask for a fried egg at breakfast as refusal may offend. In all a great location just get yoru pricing right and when asked for something as challenging as a fried egg consider it an opportunity to make a guest smile. We will be in Alvor again next year this hotel mmm not sure there are planty to choose from so we will be watching how the rest of the year for trip advisor feedback.More
Has the Dom Joao ll dropped standards??
Stayed at the Dom Joao ll for the 5th year running, and it is still one of my favourite Hotels, in terms of location, view (from Sea View rooms), friendlyness, and cleanliness. However on our stay last week, the Breakfast buffet has certainly gone downhill, in terms of choice, quality, and service. The hot food option seems to now offer sausage, & bacon of a much cheaper and lesser quality than in previous years. There are also no fried eggs readily available, you have to queue at the omlette "station", and each one is cooked individually. The problem with this, is that with only one person usually cooking, being third in line means a 10 minute wait. There was also no fresh tomatoes or salad option for the sliced cheese and meat section, and the fresh fruit section, actually was tinned "fruit salad" for most of the week. So generally as a "seasoned" visitor to the Dom Joao ll, we felt standards for the breakfast this year, had generally slipped. Lets hope its back to normal service for my next visit,More
