This place gives you stylish rooms, a couple of pools and a spa. And it’s right by a sandy beach.
Pestana Dom Joao II is just a stone’s throw from the soft sands of Praia d’Alvor. It’s also only a 10-minute walk to the town’s main square, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars.
Inside, rooms are ultra-modern – think neutral décor and rainfall showers in the bathrooms. They all come with a balcony or terrace. Plus, some have a sea view so they’re perfect for watching sunsets.

Second visit here
This was our second visit to this lovely hotel. It has a fabulous location, great pool area, and we managed to get sunbeds whenever we went around the pool. We did find this year, however, more people reserving beds with towels that we didn't find last year. Some had towels on most of the day with no one on them, annoying as they had prime spots! Breakfast good, but there are busy times. The cleaning staff are amazing and friendly, some other staff need to smile more, but very polite and they do their job. The rooms are spacious and the beds very comfortable. This hotel has a charm of its own, not clinical like a lot of ultra modern hotels.More
A few flaws but nice
This was our first visit to the Algarve and pleasantly satisfied. We paid the extra to have a suite which was lovely. Good sized rooms with a garden view. The hotels is in a nice location for the beach and a 15 minute walk into town (or eu5 cab ride). For us, there we're 3 negatives: Breakfast. Needs more staff to work the egg cooker. Always a huge queue for an omelette or fried egg. Pool. All the outdoor pools are salt water. This is fine for some people but my kids hated it. They wanted to spend the week in the indoor chlorine pool, not great for my tan (or my ears, very noisy). There are other Pestana hotels/residence in Alvor but they all have salt water pools. Lunch. Worst experience for an overpriced buffet. Half the food had run out, and despite being repeatedly told it would be replenished, it failed to arrive. One of us ordered a baguette which arrived 20 minutes after the rest of us had finished eating from the under supplied buffet. Staff were also un-attentive and required me to keep getting out of my chair to remind them we were there and take our food/drinks order. In summary. Lovely place if you like salty pools and don't like eggs. Lunch can be found for half the price at the many beach bars within 5 mins walk. 👍 Tip: Pool loungers get filled relatively early, but the pool next door (east down the boardwalk - 2 min walk) was always half empty. 02008 gets you through the gate and your hotel key card into the clean toilets. Spacious hotel for a relaxing vacation
I am very happy with our choice to stay at this hotel for a week of sun and relaxation. The facilities are very spacious and it is easy to find a place that fits your needs and the rooms were satisfying, which is the most important. Service could be better, but was still OK. To summarize my general impression: good hotel, would probably come back again if going to Alvor. More detailed review further down. My main imporvement suggestion for the hotel is to follow the recipe that many similar resorts already implemented where reserving sunbeds with towels are prohibited before a certain time (9/10). It is ridiculous that a majority of the sunbeds are reserved already before nine, but most are empty until ten. My experience is that it is very appreciated by most of the guests if such a rule is enforced by the staff who simply just removes everything if nobody is there. After the decided time (say 9/10) it is OK to keep your stuff there so that you can swim etc., but then you avoid having to set the alarm just to make sure to get your sunbed... Location wise the hotel is situated great in regards to beach access and getting away from the crowded parts of the town, which is beneficial during the day. At night you need to walk for 15 minutes to get to the parts of the city where all the restaurants are, but this is a trade-off I am most willing to make. The whole area feels quite well maintained and refurbished, with big enough rooms and good sleep quality (comfortable bed and quiet environment). The outdoor facilities are the main reason with a spacious garden where you can move around your sunbed or just take a towel and lie on the grass. Utilizing the space is especially good if you don't want to have all the noise from the kids in the pool right next to you. Breakfast is great with a good selection of both hod and cold food. Quality is good given the number of guests staying at the hotel. Service is not impressing. Staff was not very pro-active in their information. For example we didn't get the standard "breakfast is served..., the gym is located...., etc." upon check-in so we had to ask all those questions ourselves (or as in most cases just figure it out). Cleaning is OK, but I think they are understaffed since they usually didn't get to our room until five-ish which feels late. The gym was great with lots of free weights (dumbbells -30kg, bars could be loaded much more) and space. Love these kind of hotel gyms! Didn't visit the spa or the indoor pool so can't comment on this.More
Pestana listen to your customers
Our 6th time here to a hotel that we loved. What has happened since last October???The food at breakfast is dreadful the worst we have ever experienced in our life time. We used to always look forward to breakfast. Now I could go on to describe it however as i have read all the other reviews it has been well documented MANAGEMENT. Why will you not listen?? We met with you about 3 times during our 3 week stay to tell you about the problems in the Dining room and the dreadful food. But all you did was smile and advise you had no other complaints... REALLY.... you say the food has not changed since last October but it has. I guess you will try to this review and tell me that if I visit again you will do everything to improve my stay... well guess what ... I will be visiting again on September for 3 weeks so now you will have the opportunity to fulfil your promises and make our stay better. How can you do this.... Staff that smile and help the customer. Proper quality food for breakfast. Lower your extortionate bar prices and serve a Gin /Tonic with a proper bottle of tonic per drink not tonic out of a large plastic bottle. Toiletries in the room. Better towels in the room and for the sun loungers.... These are the minimum requirements needed to bring this hotel back to its previous standard... you are killing off your loyal customer support.... is this really what you want to do ???? So folks watch this space on October to see if the Management really care about their customers and their loyalty.... GET WITH IT NOW MANAGEMENT OF THIS ONCE LOVELY HOTEL.....More
Just thought I would write a review after reading what I think is a really awful and unfair review of this hotel. I returned from my holiday on 7th July. My husband and my self have holidayed here on several occasions since 2003., we think it is a lovely hotel with beautiful grounds on a wonderful beach. We only ever go bed and breakfast because Alvor town has so many fabulous restaurants to try out. Breakfasts this year were not as good as previous visits mainly due to the fact we had to queue for omelettes and fried eggs and there was only one person cooking them. The hotel is spotlessly clean, the rooms are comfortably furnished and the beds and pillows are comfortable, we take a travel kettle so we can have a cup of tea. Signs of wear and tear can be see in some of the communal places but I don't se this as a problem. I have always found the staff to be helpful, pleasant and polite. The grounds are lovely and well tended, there are lots of trees, where, if you want shade you can get it. There were plenty of sunbeds, we never had a problem getting one, you always have a few guests up at the crack of dawn putting their towels out wherever you go. I think the main pool is a very good size, there is an indoor pool and another quieter pool in the grounds. You cannot beat the location of the hotel, right on the beach which has recently had new wooden walkways, if you go left you find lots of big rocks, turn right and it takes you right in to Alvor. We enjoyed a lovely relaxing holiday here and are looking forward to returning next year.More
