An introduction to Villa Tonico
Casa Tonica is a well appointed villa in an excellent, quiet location offering rural views and the chance to explore the 'real' Portugal. Three kilometres from the centre of Alte, guests will find this villa the perfect retreat, with only a half hour stroll or five minute drive needed to reach the pretty village's restaurants, bars and shops.
The owner has renovated the villa throughout and tastefully decorated it too, leaving us very much impressed even after many years' experience in the Algarve.
Floating on a hillside in the Serra do Caldeirao region, Alte is arguably one of the prettiest villages in the Algarve. With just 500 residents, this peaceful hamlet is the perfect relaxation retreat for escaping the crowds of the coast. Remnants of the Algarve's Moorish heritage can be found here, by way of rooftops adorned with filigree lattice chimneys, and elaborate Manueline architecture can be appreciated at the 16th-century Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, which has baptismal fonts and a gilded altarpiece. The chapel of Sao Sebastiao is well worth a visit to look at the Sevillian azulejos - beautiful and rare, 16th-century, painted ceramic tiles. A meander past the church takes you to the leafy surroundings of the River Alte cloaked by gently overhanging trees – the ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon picnic.
