Villa Esteval Dos Mouros

in Alte , Algarve

  • Idyllic country hamlet
  • Tastefully restored
  • Great for walks
A beautifully restored 19th-century house in a tranquil village setting.
This restored 19th-century village building is full of original features. There’s the fireplace, the thick stone walls and the old oven with its massive chimney – all adding real character to the place. And although it adjoins a neighbouring house, it’s not overlooked so it feels very private.

Inside, it’s smart, grand and very comfortable. Tiled floors are scattered with rugs. And big sofas with lots of cushions and pale throws make the living room a really relaxing spot. The dining room, meanwhile, with its elegant dark wood furniture, is accessed through a stone archway.

It’s just as stylish in the bedrooms, too. There’s a twin and an en suite double on the ground floor, and a single bedroom in the loft, reached by a neat spiral staircase with its own small sitting area.

Outside, shallow steps lead into the pool which is surrounded by a tiled terrace. A generous supply of sun loungers, a pool shower and a big barbecue add a touch of style to outdoor living.

In terms of location, it’s surrounded by countryside and the impressive Serra do Caldeirao. In fact, there’s just a typical Portuguese coffee house to provide the locals with a gathering place. The area’s great for walking though, and a number of trails provide an opportunity for a cooling dip in the river.

Your guide to Alte, Algarve

"Nestled north of Vilamora is the charming whitewashed village of Alte, where the Algarve’s rural way of life remains unspoilt. Those seeking breathtaking scenery will be stirred by the picturesque setting of this landscape, with rolling hills sweeping out to the horizon."

Floating on a hillside in the Serra Do Galdeirao region, Alte is arguably one of the prettiest villages in the Algarve. With just 500 residents, this peaceful hamlet is the perfect relaxation retreat for escaping the crowds of the coast. Remnants of the Algarve’s Moorish heritage can be found here, by way of rooftops adorned with Filigree lattice chimneys, and elaborate Manueline architecture can be appreciated at the 16th century Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, which has baptismal fonts and a gilded altarpiece. The chapel of Sao Sebastiao is well worth a visit to look at the Sevillian azulejos - beautiful and rare 16th century painted ceramic tiles. A meander past the church takes you to the leafy surroundings of the River Alte cloaked by gently overhanging trees – the ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon picnic.

Great villa to stay at if you want peace and quiet but also close to shops, restaurants etc. We ate at local restaurants where the food was very good and very reasonably priced. Local wine very drinkable and reasonably priced. The villa was extremely... more on this review
