The Balaia Atlantico is the kind of place that graces the pages of design magazines - it's swish, sophisticated and contemporary. But it doesn't make a song and dance about it. In fact, it's about as laid-back as you can get. The kind of place where families are just as welcome as couples.
Design plays a big part in this hotel. Modern sofas and chairs greet you as you step into the lobby. And then there are the smart apartments. Clothed in bold colours with elegant wood furniture, they're more like city pads. What's more, they're all well-equipped with a kitchenette, lounge and separate bedroom. Plus, they have satellite TV, air-conditioning and a private balcony or terrace.
The restaurant follows suit. Minimalist, with red high-backed chairs and white table linen, the vibe's very much New York chic. The food's good too, serving Portuguese and international specialities. And the breakfast room is just as impressive with the same unfussy design. There's also a cosy bar where you can really escape from it all.
Step outside and you're greeted by pretty gardens and the hotel's lagoon-shaped pools. Sunk into a roomy terrace that's accessorised with sun loungers, parasols and the all-important pool bar it makes great relaxing ground. Factor in tennis courts, an 18-hole mini-golf course and loads for kids and you've got one holiday feast and a half.
