All olive groves and old city walls, Ulcinj has found the balancing point between away-from-it-all and in the thick of the action. It sits at the southernmost point of Montenegro’s coastline, a stone’s throw from the Albanian border. And other big towns are few and far between in this part of the world. As such it’s got a miles-from-anywhere feel that’s slightly at odds with its Dubrovnik-style appearance - this Medieval jumble of terracotta rooftops is backed by the biggest olive grove in Europe and trimmed with a 13-kilometre stretch of sand. The city itself is split between the old town of Stari Grad and the newer bit by the beach, and there’s four kilometres between the two. The Korso, otherwise known as the promenade, is where you’ll find more modern restaurants and fast food joints cooking up Montenegro’s famous select-your-own-topping burgers. While in the old town, as you’d expect, things take a turn for the traditional. Cue a ruined Turkish fortress, dome-roofed mosques and a maze of Romanesque and Renaissance houses. Here you’ll find a clutch of galleries and cafés, as well as restaurants where candle-lit tables are set right on the street.
