“Effortlessly stylish, the Westin Dragonara is a chic 5 star with a location to-die-for.”
This hotel is one of those places that radiates style. Mixing old-time glamour with modern design, it’s one good-looking resort. And it’s all wrapped up in a Neoclassical building and set on 18-acre peninsula, just footsteps from its own private beach. You’ll find it just outside St Julian’s Bay, a 15-minute drive from the island’s bustling capital.

Location aside, it’s the interior that’s the big draw. Take the lobby, which has a designer neutral colour scheme, sofas piled with candy-striped cushions and, at its centre, a mood-lit black lacquer piano bar. The Quadro restaurant serves fish and seafood specialities in a nautical navy and white striped setting. The Bedouin bar, meanwhile, with its floor cushions and lanterns sits at the authentic end of the Maltese design spectrum.

As for the bedrooms, they score just as many points on style. Sumptuous Heavenly Beds, with their signature pillow-top mattress, cosy duvets and crisp high thread-count sheets, not to mention five plush pillows, come as standard. There are in-room extras like cableTVs, minibars and velour bathrobes. Factor in a palette of rich cream and white, and a seaview balcony, and you’ve got the perfect sanctuary.

Outside, there are two sea-facing pools. Hemmed by palm-planted gardens and roomy terraces, it sets the scene for relaxation. But if you’re looking to unwind in style, head to the beauty clinic. Here you’ll find everything from Guinot facials to hot stone massages on the menu, and it’s right nextdoor to the two-storey gym and indoor pool.

Your guide to St Julian's Bay, Malta

“With a picture-perfect harbour and a world-class clubbing scene, there’s more to St Julian's than meets the eye.”

From sleepy shore-side hamlet to amped-up playground of the young and beautiful, St Julian's is one to watch. Clustered around the bay of the same name, the resort unravels in a maze of winding streets. The town’s quayside is a good-looking strip of restaurants and bars topped with pink bougainvillaea. Away from the coast, you’ve got the Bay Street complex. Home to shops selling everything from CDs to silk prints - and even a branch of M&S – it’s the perfect place to show your credit card what it was born to do. It’s also got plenty in the way of cafés and restaurants. Talking of food and drink, St Julians is packed with cocktail bars, bistros and hole-in-the wall eateries. So if you want to go local or worship under the golden arches, you’ll not go hungry. And when the sun sinks, this place really comes alive. Whether you’re a DJ, or just love to party, the name on your lips should be Paceville. This part of town already has a strong clubbing scene with the likes of Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo and home-grown DJ Ruby spinning the decks. Revellers pack the place out on a nightly basis and not just during summer months either. Most of the bars and dancing dens are to be found in the four streets around the main square on Dragonara Road. That said, if you prefer your nightlife at a lower volume, nearby Sleima and capital city Valletta are both a short bus ride away. Along the coast, meanwhile, you won’t find too much in the way of beaches, it’s more smooth rocks stretching out into the sea. Plus, there are plenty of lidos, and a rare sandy stretch in nearby St George’s Bay.
