Guide to San Anton

Malta has been a focal point for European history for thousands of years. This is reflected in the architecture and culture of the whole island making any trip here more than a simple beach holiday, although the almost continuous sun is ideal for the tan hungry. San Anton is a small resort that dwells in the centre of the island. Its location gives it the great benefit of being within reach of much that is of interest. The ancient town of Mdina is to the south while the long stretch of inlet-filled coastline along St. Paul's bay is to the north.

Malta has managed to hold onto much of its style and culture despite the large influx of tourists, just as they managed to hold out against a huge Ottoman force in 1565 and against the Italians and Germans in the devastating siege of 1940-43. This makes it a wonderful place to tour, especially if you have your own transport. San Anton itself is a quiet place that has a stylish edge to it. You are, after all, sharing the place with the President of Malta. He resides in the Grand Masters' Palace. You can visit the botanical gardens here, though you won't be allowed to go inside The Palace. You never know you may catch the President pottering round the gardens if you are lucky.

Beaches

San Anton itself doesn't have any beaches. However you are never far away from a refreshing swim on this island. The huge swathe of coast that sweeps down St. Paul's Bay and into Salina Bay has an array of coves and inlets and includes Bugibba, a large resort with all the attractions that go with it. If you aren't too keen on rocky beaches, Mellieha to the northwest and Golden Bay to the west are great for sand lovers and have plenty of water sports for the active.

Eating out

Because of the small nature of the resort your hotel will provide much of your food. However if you do manage to get to one of the local restaurants you'll be in for a treat. Seafood is obviously high on the menu and it should be pleasantly washed down with a local wine. If you're missing home, there are plenty of English influenced bites to be had.

Nightlife

San Anton has a few bars but isn't renowned for its boisterous nightlife: you come here to soak up the culture and take life at a leisurely pace. For the thrills of a fully equipped tourist town, you should go to one of the large beachside resorts such as Bugibba that has bright lights and throbbing beats aplenty

Shopping

Shopping here is limited to the essentials: since you'll be spending much of your time out and about you can do your shopping elsewhere. Mdina and Valletta are the places to pick up some locally crafted goods that make for great gifts with gold, silver and glassware all good value. For some touristy trinkets the larger resorts such as Bugibba will give you all you need.

Local information

Those interested in history will love Malta, and San Anton is almost perfectly placed to take advantage of the various sights that pepper the island. Mdina is an obvious highlight: its quiet old world style will have you charmed. The fortified 16th century city of Valletta is also worth a visit, with its network of narrow backstreets and quaint squares.
