Guide to Gozo

'If doing nothing is your holiday mantra, come and getaway in the slow lane in gorgeous Gozo.'

Marooned between Tunisia and Sicily, Gozo sits serenely and modestly - trying to shirk the limelight. And it has for a long time, being one of those places most people have vaguely heard of, but don't know much about. But now it's being thrust into the limelight by A-list royalty. Sean Connery, Billy Connolly and Sharon Stone have all recently been spotted here. And it's no wonder. This looker of an island has a remoteness that's liberating. The golden silence here is a truly tranquil antidote to everyday life. Despite its tortoise-like pace though, you'll find plenty to keep you on your toes here. There are the historic treasures for a start. Often called an open-air museum, you'll find oodles of ancient sights to Indiana Jones your way through in Gozo. Don't miss the Ggantija though. Dating back to 3,600 BC, they're the oldest freestanding temples in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. Then there's the can't-believe-your-eyes pretty scenery. Writer Edward Lear was so impressed with it he had to make up words like 'pomskizillious' to describe it. We're talking cushiony-green hills. Clouds of colourful flowers. And glowing orange groves. You'll find it hard to suppress your 'oohs' and 'ahhs' when walking through this lot. And last but by no means least, there's the jaw-dropping coast. Wherever you look here, you can always see the inky-blue seas, smudged with bright-turquoise swirls. And these waters are renowned for their diving with underwater caves and lagoons to explore. If you want to stay dry though, simply shake your towel out on one of the sunburnt beaches. You'll find angel white shores, such as Dahlet Qorrot. Glittering pebble coves like Hondoq ir-Rummien. And terracotta-red sands like Ramla il-Hamra, where you'll find the cave where the nymph Calypso is said to have allured Ulysses for seven years. However you spend your time here, make sure you indulge in a spot of shopping. Gozo is famous for its crafts, so stock up on handmade lace, blown glass and silver filigree jewellery. And wherever you are, make a beeline for the enticing eateries where you can feast on delicious island specialities such as 'pastizzi', savoury cheese pastries and 'fenek' rabbit stewed in wine. You think you'd be hard stretched to find an unspoilt destination that does what it says on the tin these days. But Gozo more than lives up to pin-drop peaceful name tag. One thing's for sure – it's set to become the small island with the big fan base.

Beaches

Gozo has some sandy coves and beaches, typically nestling at the front of picturesque fishing villages, such as Xlendi and Marsalforn. Dwejra is a beach with a difference - surrounded by interesting rock formations, it has an 'inland sea', where the ocean spills through arches in the rock face to create a massive pool - very safe for little ones. The large, fine red sand beach at Ramla Bay is also worth a visit with some water sports available. Scuba diving and snorkelling are very popular in Gozo, particularly the 'blue hole' - a natural plunge pool that seems to go to the centre of the earth.

Eating out

The majority of restaurants are to be found along the harbour fronts of the island, where you'll find a great choice of meals ranging from burgers to local fish delicacies. We recommend that you eat as much local cuisine as possible, safe in the knowledge that everything on your plate is fresh from Gozo's green fields or clear sea.

Nightlife

There is not too much in terms of nightlife in Gozo but you will find a few bars and discos scattered around the island.

Shopping

Victoria's central square hosts morning markets. Here you can find fabrics, embroidery, ceramics, jewellery and glassware, as well as a good selection of local and tourist shops.

Local information

Gozo's wealth of sightseeing cannot fail to impress you. Visit the prehistoric temples of Ggantija - two impressive sanctuaries dating between 4100-2500 BC, or admire the beautiful walled Citadel. The capital Victoria is well worth spending some time exploring, particularly its stunning cathedral. For natural beauty, how about a cliff top walk, perhaps followed by a restaurant meal in one of the local fishing villages? If relaxing is just getting too much for you, you can easily take a boat trip to Malta.
