An introduction to Podere San Luigi
Pancole lies in the heart of the wine-producing region which produces, amongst others, the white 'Vernaccia di San Gimignano' - the first Italian wine to be granted the D.O.C.G. appellation back in 1963, and the red 'Chianti Colli Senese', also D.O.C.G. The Romans passed through this little hamlet on the way to France, laying down the 'Via Francigena' road linking Rome with far-flung Calais, which later became an important pilgrimage route. Today, there is a 17th-century church and a single restaurant in Pancole, which is just a five-minute drive from the restored farmhouse of Podere San Luigi.
The farm building has been converted into five comfortable and charming apartments, one of the ground-floor apartments of which has been retained by the friendly owner Signor Mario Giubbolini for his family's use, so he is on hand to keep the grounds in trim - oak, olive, cypress, walnut and fruit trees as well as beautiful roses all flourish in his capable hands. This really is an idyllic and verdant oasis with no shortage of spaces to relax in, be it on a sunlounger around the large pool and gazing out at the rolling, vine-clad hillside stretching out into the distance, under the shady pergola by the pool fringed with flowering pots of geraniums or around one of the tables provided in the garden for al fresco dining.
The medieval towers of San Gimignano, just 6km away, will doubtless be on every guest's itinerary but so should the lesser-known Tuscan classic, Certaldo Alto. This perfectly preserved, walled hilltop town, now accessible using the funicular, is just 6km from Podere San Luigi. Built entirely of red brick, Certaldo was once home to Boccaccio. Here, and in the surrounding countryside, you will find an excellent choice of restaurants.
