This impressive old manor house has a superb hillside position, peaceful and rural and yet it is within easy striking distance of some of Tuscany's architectural jewels. The tranquillity and beauty of Il Coltro's country setting, which has hardly changed over the centuries, acts like a balm to the spirit, especially as dusk falls and the soft twilight etches the hills into layers of misty, mysterious silhouettes. You can revel in the play of light on the lovely landscape while enjoying aperitifs or dinner on Il Coltro's lawns, although when the sun is at its zenith undoubtedly the best place to enjoy its rays is from the swimming pool and sun terrace.

Il Coltro has been converted into six lovely apartments. With windows framing one of the most evocative sights in Tuscany - the medieval towers of San Gimignano above a rolling patchwork of yellow fields and green woods - it is no wonder that one of the six apartments at Il Coltro is called 'La Veduta' - the view.

Immediately on completion of the painstaking renovation, Il Coltro was chosen to house some of the greatest names of the British stage - illustrious members of the cast of the Zefirelli film - Tea with Mussolini. The interiors of Il Coltro display a harmonious synthesis of the best of Italian design with the most traditional themes of rural Tuscany.

Each apartment has its own personality in terms of style, size, layout and outlook so a blanket description just won't suffice. There are common elements: kitchens which have prettily painted woodwork, plenty of comfortable sofas and armchairs, decorative brickwork, mellow coloured walls, terracotta floors and beamed ceilings. Splendid 'Il Forno', is a split-level two-bedroom apartment notable for its huge sitting room with pietra serena fireplace. First-floor 'I Cipressi' resembles 'La Veduta', not only because it also enjoys lovely views, but also for its layout (double bedroom and mezzanine bedroom - air-conditioning in the mezzanine bedroom) and decor, with old pieces of 'arte povera' furniture contrasting with modern abstract art. 'Il Sole' has an open plan living room with sleeping gallery. An additional apartment is used by the owner's in-laws who are genial, generous and appreciated hosts.
