Guide to Montaione

"Sample a Tuscany of times long-forgotten in this pocket of perfectly rural tranquillity."

If you appreciate sweeping views. If you think a holiday should be about deep relaxation. Like your history and love immersing yourself in a local culture. Then Montaione should be high on your list of places to visit. It perches proudly, some 350 metres up one of the gently rolling hills that characterise the Tuscan region. From this vantage point it offers you the chance to stand, open-mouthed, above the captivating green valleys. The view is breathtaking; a vista sweeping magnificently from one horizon to the other, taking in a countryside of slivery-green olive groves interwoven with cool forests and regimented vineyards – their firm round grapes ripening in the warm sun, ready to make the fabulous Chianti for which the region is famed. Montaione itself is as old as the art of viticulture and olive growing, perhaps even more ancient. Its origins date back to the Etruscan-Roman period and local archaeological research has unearthed significant settlements dated back to that time. You can actually see for yourself the excavations of the intact crypts of the church of San Biagio, which was built in the Paleo-Christian era! Of course, Montaione has changed a little over the centuries, but there is still plenty of history and atmosphere in its narrow, winding streets; in its tiny shops selling pieces made by local artisans and in its small, family restaurants serving dishes with a culinary style which has stood the test of time.
