Il Vecchio Mulino

in Coreglia Antelminelli , Tuscany

  • Secluded retreat
  • Rustic charm
  • Great for exploring North Tuscany
A soothing, tranquil and secluded retreat for even the most stressed urban dweller.
Pretty and full of character, this converted watermill is tucked away in a green valley below the picturesque village of Coreglia Antelminelli. It’s only about two kilometres from the village, but feels well off the beaten track.

Grassy grounds and tall trees lead down to the brook that once gave life to the mill. And it’s in this leafy glade you’ll find the private swimming pool, bordered in natural stone. The peaceful grounds are perfect for outdoor living with a terrace in the gardens and another by the house.

Inside, the renovation work has ensured that features like the ancient wooden doorway, heavy wooden beams and terracotta floors have been restored to their former glory, while the old grinding stones are displayed in the garden. There’s a large fireplace in the comfortable living and dining room – a welcome feature in spring and autumn, and the spacious kitchen is well equipped.

Up on the first floor, accessed by an open spiral stairway, are all four bedrooms – two doubles or twins and two singles. One of the single bedrooms has a floor hatch to a secondary access via a tiny spiral stairway – it’s great fun for older children but unsuitable for toddlers.

Your guide to Coreglia Antelminelli, Tuscany

"Northwest of Castelnuovo de Garfagnana in northern Tuscany lies a mountainous nature reserve – Parco Naturale delle Alpi Apuane. It is here, to the east of the little walled town of Barga that you’ll find Coreglia Antelminelli."

Its main claim to fame is a plaster figurine museum, the Museo della Figurina di Gesso, which tells you the history of these local products, once sold by traders all over Europe. Coreglia Antelminelli is an excellent base for exploring, though you’ll probably need a car as some areas are inaccessible any other way. Drive south and both natural beauty and man-made attractions await you.., Marvel at the Giant’s Cooking Pots – huge hollows left by the glacial meltwaters of the Ice Age. You are also within easy driving distance of the beautiful Roman town Lucca, the beaches of Viareggio on the coast and Torre del Lago Puccini, where the famous operatic composer lived and is buried.
