This delightful auberge near Florence stands out not just because it offers the peace of a rural retreat and authentic Tuscan cuisine but also because it provides the opportunity to acquire an insight into the art and history of the region.

For three generations, the family of Susanna Ballerini, who own and run Le Boscarecce, have been immersed in two passions: art history and hospitality.

There is plenty of time available to point you to the historic staging posts on the Pilgrim's Way along the Via Francigena to Rome, or to provide you with an itinerary to literary Florence and the abodes of writers and poets. Florence, Pisa and Siena are all within a 40km radius and you can take the train to Florence from nearby Castelfiorentino.

The fourteen rooms have traditional-style furniture and prettily tiled bathrooms. Susanna is as fascinated by the history of cooking as by the history of art, this being reflected in the traditional Tuscan specialities offered at her table. Meals are served either in the converted barn or out on the large terrace shaded by a marquee, with its panoramic views over the Florentine hills.

Below this terrace and set in the gardens is a large pool and further exercise can be had on the tennis court or on the mountain bikes provided.
