At the foot of the Apuan Alps lies Camaiore. Sheltered in a huge natural basin beneath the peaks, it's a small town surrounded by green fields and hillside villages. What's more, it's only a 20-minute drive from its seaside namesake - Lido Di Camaiore – a bustling seafront town with gorgeous sandy beaches.
Camaiore itself is a town rich in heritage. Historical and religious sites dating back to the 7th-century are dotted along time-worn streets. The oldest one is set just outside the town - the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter. It's a modest affair built between the 7th- and 13th-centuries. Step inside and you'll find a 16th-century organ that's still used today – most notably during Camaiore's Organ Festival that takes place in the Abbey every year during July and August.
But this place doesn't just satisfy the culture vultures out there. With a weekly market every Friday that's stocked to the rafters with freshly cooked chicken and delicious cheeses, it's great for foodies, too. And for a real authentic Italian treat, make sure you head to Pieve Di Camaiore. It may be two miles out of town, but it's home to the best pizzeria in the area – Bar de Pietro.
