Holidays in Arezzo

An introduction to Arezzo

Tucked into the thigh of the big boot, honey-coloured Arezzo is a solid chunk of Tuscan charm. Making a triangle with Florence and Siena, it's got all the wow-factor sights and gorgeousness of its neighbours, but luckily for you – isn't as well known. Sitting on a steep hillside, which edges up from the Arno River, it's one of the region's richest cities. Wind your way through the creamy paved streets to the higher slopes and you'll see where the uber-wealthy live, many who have made their millions from the thriving jewellery industry here. Also making their home here is the gothic Cathedral of San Donato - a 12th century gem with medieval stained-glass windows and the tomb of Pope Gregory X - and the Medici Fortress, a ruined 16th century castle which has jaw-dropping views over the city and lush landscape beyond. Back down amongst the hub of the shops, bars and restaurants, you'll find one of the most impressive sights of all – the Basilica of San Francesco. A 13th century Tuscan-Gothic church, it houses one of the country's greatest Renaissance fresco masterpieces – the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca. Two other must-sees to tick off include the Roman amphitheatre and museum and the Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. When your finger tires of taking photos though, head for the sloping Piazza Grande - the square with lots of heart. Here, you can browse the wonderful antiques market held the first Sunday of every month or catch Giostra del Saracino, a breathtaking medieval re-enactment. Then pop in and out of the beautiful jewellery shops before cosying up in traditional trattoria for a slap-up lunch. Oh, and if you're a budding film-buff, everywhere may look familiar as this was where Robert Benigni's movie 'Life is Beautiful' was set. Proud of their motion-picture setting, the locals have filled the streets with information about where various scenes were shot – so you can follow in the director's footsteps while you're here. However you spend your time here, this can't-help-love city will win you over. And over. And over again.
