La Plage Resort  

Hotel La Plage sits opposite one of Sicily's most photographed spots – the aptly-named Isola Bella. Anchored just off the coast, this pretty little island is hemmed by turquoise waters and topped with greenery. As idyllic Mediterranean views go, it's hard to beat.

And that's not all on the setting front - the hotel's private bungalows are tucked in quiet pinewoods and there's a pebble beach more or less on the doorstep. Getting into the resort centre is a cinch, too - the cable car that whisks visitors up to the town centre of Taormina is just a five-minute walk away. One last thing to bear in mind regarding the location - as with most of the hotels along this stretch of coast, a train line runs behind the property but causes little disturbance.

As to the hotel itself, it was recently the recipient of a top-to-toe refurbishment. As such, the decor sits firmly at the minimalist end of the design spectrum. Ground floor rooms are dressed in neutral tones with splashes of colour courtesy of decorative throws and scatter cushions. Add ultra-contemporary flourishes, like the space-age headboards, and you've got one seriously sleek boudoir. And you'll find all the usual hotel gadgets in place, like air-conditioning, TVs and minibars. Some even come with their own whirlpool baths in the garden.

Similarly, the fusion restaurant is incredibly chic. Here, beautifully-dressed tables and funky angular chairs evoke the look and feel of a top London eatery. As do the flavours. The food is inspired by Asian and Mediterranean culinary traditions and the dishes are cooked to perfection. A la carte meals aside, the breakfast buffet offers up plenty of choice and light lunches are available by the poolside.

Rounding off the picture you've got a swimming pool, a spa and a gym. Add those stellar views into the mix and you've got one boutique hotel to die for.
