Hotel Caiammari

Reached via an elegant swaying avenue of eucalyptus trees, the pale yellow walls of the sophisticated Hotel Caiammari stand out against the oasis of green that are the hotel's magnificent gardens, dotted with ancient palms, ferns, huge rubber and bay trees, banana plants and lush lawns, plus a pretty fountain in the centre.

To one side of the old house - which is the family seat of a 17th-century Sicilian noble, whose name was mentioned in the first Godfather film - is the fabulous pool area with two huge pools, one for adults and the other for children. A pavilion next to the pool plays host to the occasional colourful Sicilian wedding or party - a great chance to people watch when the locals are letting their hair down.

The bar and restaurant are on the ground floor of the house and serve up traditional Sicilian fare in elegant surroundings, with seafood being a particular speciality. On the upper floor of the house are two spacious suites and the other rooms are housed in newer additions to the grounds in three pretty courtyards: the Olive Tree, Cactus and Orange Tree Courts. The rooms are stylishly and boldly decorated with original artwork on the walls and the colour schemes coordinate with each courtyard's individual theme.

Only six kilometres from Siracusa, Hotel Caiammari seems a million miles from the hustle and bustle of the city, although a trip to the historic old town and the ancient theatre are a must. Also close by is the Lido Arenella - a Blue Flag designated beach - should you wish to cool off in the sea. The smooth rocks jutting into the sea at Ognina are perfect for basking in the sun.
