Rosa Sul Mare

Perched high on the clifftops of Sicily, this place looks down on some of the finest scenery around. Not only can you see the hotel's gardens in all their glory, but you've got a fabulous view of the sea below. Okay, so a stunning seaview is nothing out of the ordinary, but here the water is so clear you can actually see the sun shimmering off the seabed. And if you keep your eyes peeled, you might even see schools of dolphins swimming by.

As for the hotel itself, it's Mediterranean styling all the way - white-washed terraces, tiered pathways and stacks of shrubs and flowers. Inside, it's more of the same understated elegance. The apartments are decked-out with terracotta-tiled floors and stylish iron beds - and 19th-century Sicilian furniture raises the style bar.

Interiors aside though, it's the pool scene that goes all out to impress. Set in a rocky garden speckled with palm trees and caper plants, it's ideal for easing yourself into that stress-free holiday mode. Swimmers will happily clock up a few lengths in the aquamarine depths. But for sea lovers it's all about the real thing. It's quite a climb down the steps to the rocky shore, but the reward is well worth the effort – the crystal clear waters are perfect for snorkelling. And if that sounds too much like hard work, take on the task of doing not very much in particular.

If you're looking for a picture-postcard spot that's high on romance and low on noise, this place is just the ticket.
