Tenuta San Michele

If you're looking for somewhere a little less ordinary, Tenuta San Michele is something rather special. A rustic yet refined wine estate, it sits on a verdant hillside overlooking the charming village of Santa Venerina and the twinkling Mediterranean in the distance. Traditional Sicilian wines and spumante have been produced here since 1800, and over the last 25 years, new wines have been produced with international acclaim. So it's great news for connoisseurs as the owners will happily organise tours of the vineyards and cellars, as well as holding tasting sessions. Run by the Scamacca del Murgo family, this relaxing retreat now warmly welcomes guests to stay in its lovingly restored buildings, converted from an old wine cellar and a farmhouse. The one-bedroom apartment is elegantly furnished in a traditional style with wooden furnishings and whitewashed walls. All have satellite television and also benefit from an open-plan kitchen, lounge and a shared outdoor terrace. At mealtimes, the charming restaurant here serves delicious home-cooked cuisine, made from fresh local ingredients. And you can choose to dine in either the restaurant room or al fresco on the patio with views looking out over Mount Etna. You'll also find a reading area in the lounge, which has a cosy fireplace and there are PCs you can use, too. When you really want to relax though, head out to the pretty gardens where you'll find a rectangular-shaped swimming pool flanked by sun loungers and tables and chairs. It's the perfect spot to soak up the scenery and totally unwind. Pin-drop peaceful, this rural estate is idyllic for a serene Sicilian escape.
