A tranquil little town that’s typically Sicilian, Santa Venerina shouts peace and quiet. Sitting on a verdant hill-top on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Etna, the views from here are to die for. There are age-old vineyards to the west. The pyramid-shaped Etna to the north. And sparkling turquoise seas to the south. In fact, the scenery is so stunning, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the towns that make up the Mount Etna National Park. So it’s the perfect gateway to some of Mother Nature’s finest countryside. Set off across the lush landscape and follow the sun-dappled paths through the protected woodlands. Or if you’re a keen cyclist, why not soak it all up from the saddle? And if you’re into golf it’s well worth the half hour drive to the 18-hole Il Picciolo Golf Club with a smoking volcano as a backdrop. You’re also within easy reach of island titan Taormina with its winding medieval streets as well as a string of sand and pebble bays along the coastline. Of course, if doing nothing is your holiday mantra, spend your days strolling around town when you’re not putting your feet up. Step in time to the slow pace of the locals and poke your head in and out of the charming little shops. Watch the world go by with a frothy coffee and moreish pastry in an atmospheric café. And make sure you don’t miss market day where you can buy fresh local produce and handicrafts. Oh, and some of the island’s best wines are from this region, so it’s also well worth visiting one of the local vineyards for a tour and tasting. After dark, take a walk through the narrow lanes laced with pretty Sicilian buildings, watching the twinkling lights of neighbouring villages sparkle in the distance. Then pull up a chair in one of the traditional restaurants and enjoy a slap up meal. The perfect end to the perfect day.
