Casale Romano

An introduction to Casale Romano

Designer pads are all well and good but the best places are the ones that actually have a connection to their location. And Casale Romano certainly falls into this bracket. Tucked in over ten hectares of agricultural land, it originally started out life as a winery. The property was built back in 1888 by Gaetano Romano for his wife, Donna Lucietta. Fast forward just over a century and this old rural house is still owned by the same family but has been sensitively converted into a quaint guesthouse. It's wonderfully Sicilian, with lemon and apricot paintwork trimmed with green shutters and topped with terracotta tiles. Inside, guestrooms are fairly basic but we've chosen the 'Palmento' - a cosy studio that's ideal for romantic breaks a deux. It offers original period features like exposed beams, stonework and the wine press. It's open-plan with a hob-come-fridge kitchenette and a little shower room. You can take your pick from a selection of charming bedrooms in the main hotel building, too.

Outside there's a shared terrace for sun-worship and a sleepy little courtyard surrounded by orange and lemon trees. And it's this dreamy setting that's the real winner. Casale Romano is tucked in an amazing natural landscape called the Parco Fluviale dell'Alcantara. With lush green countryside for as far as the eye can see, this is away-from-it-all Sicily at its best. It's the kind of place where a car is a must-have as we're talking seriously rural. But jump behind the wheel and the beaches, shops and restaurants of Giardini Naxos and Taormina are within twenty minutes' drive. Slightly closer to home – about three kilometres away – you've got Francavilla di Sicilia. Here, you'll find plenty in the way of pizzerias and supermarkets, not to mention a traditional weekly market every Friday morning where you can pick up some sun-dried tomatoes and flour-dusted ciabatta. Perfetto.
