Guide to Letojanni

'Close to Taormina, but without the jet-set flurry of Sicily's Monte Carlo, Letojanni is a friendly, relaxed resort with lashings of scenic beauty.'

If you want the spectacular scenery of Sicily's east coast, without the hustle and bustle of Taormina, Letojanni's the answer. Once a small fishing village, it's now a peaceful resort with an authentic Sicilian charm. Plus a wide, fine-shingle beach backed by a prom and a picturesque harbour packed with colourful fishing boats to boot. Stroll around the delightful old town and you'll see some interesting ancient buildings, including the neo-Gothic Church of San Giuseppe housing works of art. Despite the relaxed atmosphere here though, it's by no means a backwater, so you won't be strapped for shops, gasping for bars or hungry for eateries. That being said, if you're seriously into late night partying you're sure to be less than satisfied. Geared towards the family market, Letojanni doesn't cater for clubbers, and you'll have to get your sizzle from a home-cooked meal in a trattoria and a few drinks in a bar, rather than the electrifying techno vibe of a heaving nightspot. With good public transport services, getting out and about from Letojanni is easy. Regular buses run to Taormina, just three miles away, where you can enjoy the chic, Cote d'Azur atmosphere and the jaw-droppingly beautiful views along the coast to Mount Etna from the ancient Greco-Roman amphitheatre. Or if you prefer to ride the rails, trains run to most places along the coast, including the resort of Giardini Naxos and Sicily's 'second city' Catania, an historic metropolis almost destroyed by the wrath of its 'neighbour from Hell', Etna, in 1669.

Eating out

Central to Letojanni's character are thriving industries such as the cultivation of olives, wine grapes, almonds and various fruits. As you may have guessed this makes the local cuisine a joyful experience, always fresh and tantalizing.

Nightlife

Letojanni has been relatively untouched by tourism, so options for the evenings are limited to simply relaxing with a glass of wine or sampling the delights of a traditional, home-cooked Sicilian meal. Giardini Naxos and Taormina has a greater selection of bars.

Shopping

Shops here are small and full of character with bright and colourful facades.

Adding to Letojanni's charm are its historical sites, which provide a break from a life of sun bathing and promenading, with the neo-Gothic parish church of particular interest. It's a good base as the train station has services to Giardini Naxos and Catania amongst other places.
