Casa Dello Scirocco

Casa dello Scirocco was an unexpected find. Driving through the fairly uninspiring outskirts of Lentini, the road forks off down to a dried up river valley carpeted in citrus groves and bordered on each side by ravine walls that have been weathered into undulating rock formations. It is almost as if you have entered another world. A number of years ago the plantation owner, Maria la Rocca, was clearing land to plant more trees when she happened upon a romantic ruin that used to be the summer residence of a nobleman built halfway into the ravine's walls. She will happily show you around this fascinating house, complete with its 'room of sin' for lovers and its restored hammam. Just below this house and its tranquil gardens is a large shared pool and restaurant where meals are taken.

Lentini's central position on the east of the island makes it a good base for heading out on day trips north up to Etna, Taormina and Catania, south down to Siracusa and the Baroque towns of Noto and Modica and west to the pretty ceramic-producing town of Caltagirone.
