Castello Di San Marco

An introduction to Castello Di San Marco

If you fancy surrounding yourself in Sicilian history, the unique San Marco is the perfect retreat. A beautiful blend of Baroque and Arabic architecture, it was built by Ignazio Sebastiano Cruyllas, Prince of Palagonia in 1689. Luckily, it survived the famous earthquake in the early 1690's and is one of only a few Sicilian Baroque examples still standing. Sitting in four hectares of orange and olive groves, the hotel looks like something from the pages of a fairytale book, adorned with a Rapunzel-style turret, a sweeping stairway and exquisite carvings. In fact, the latter were courtesy of famous local sculptors and are made from Etna lava – the mountain of which provides a majestic backdrop to the hotel. Take a stroll through the lush gardens with fountains and statues and you'll find a peaceful pool sunk into an attractive sun terrace. Also hidden among the swishing trees is a garden bar area with sink-into sofas under giant parasols. If you're feeling active, there's a tennis court. Or take a wander down to the private beach, just a few minutes walk away. Step inside the San Marco and you'll be just as impressed. This lovingly converted hotel is in a class of its own. It's all grand archways. Gleaming chandeliers. And oversized fireplaces. But although it's been renovated with every contemporary comfort, it's still a sumptuous period manor house through and through. There's a refined restaurant which spills out on to an al fresco terrace and serves delicious traditional cuisine. And the rooms, which are set in the grounds, are delightfully romantic and all have a ground floor terrace with a table and chairs. Pretty, palatial and pin-drop peaceful, the San Marco is a timeless retreat you'll want to return to again and again.
