'If you're seeking somewhere that's knee deep in history with bags of Mediterranean charm, head for the ancient city of Adrano.'
Cupped into Sicily's Catania region, Adrano sits in the picture-postcard foothills of Mount Etna. An ancient city surrounded by gorgeous green scenery, it's steeped in history. A tangle of winding streets laced with beautiful red-tiled stone buildings, it's a sight for sore eyes, too. And although you're in a vibrant city, it feels more like a laid-back town and is easy to explore on foot. So step in time to the slow pace of the locals and loose yourself in the tiny lanes. Spend some time popping in and out of the friendly little shops. Take a leisurely stroll through one of the palm-peppered parks. And then pull up a chair in one of the traditional trattorias and tuck into a delicious Sicilian lunch. Of course, if you want to wanderlust your way through some historical treasures you've come to the right place. One of the highlights here is the castle. Founded in 1070, this imposing building with barrel-vaulted rooms houses the remarkable Chapel of the Countess Adelasio. You'll also find three fascinating museums here including the Museo Etnoantropologico, with rich relics from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period and an art gallery with paintings and sculptures by famous Italian artists. Also well worth a visit is the Mother Church, which dates back to the 16th-century and has beautiful works of art. However you spend your days here, after dark is just as relaxed. You'll find a couple of late night places where you can stretch out the evening, but the evenings mainly revolve good food and good wine. So what are you waiting for? This is a slice of Sicily not to be missed.
