Villasimius enjoys one of the best locations in Sardinia and, considering the competition, that's saying something.
Once a quiet fishing village, it's now a bustling modern tourist centre – and for good reason. For outside town, along the jagged south-eastern coast, lies a string of beaches and coves of incredible beauty.
Here waters as clear as highly polished glass wash sandy bays with improbably romantic names like Spaggia di Porto Giuncu. Little rocky coves attract snorkellers and sunbathers looking for total seclusion. And from nearby Simius beach, another magnificent swathe of sand, glass-bottomed boats carry visitors to two miniature islands to view the colourful marine life and strange sight of a statue of the Virgin Mary dropped onto the seabed to commemorate lost sailors.
Once you've witnessed the beauty here, it won't surprise you that much of it is declared a marine nature reserve. And as if to prove it, you'll even spot flocks of vivid pink flamingos on the local headlands.
Rewind back to the town itself and there's plenty to hold your interest. Nuzzled by almond groves on the northern end of a lighthouse-tipped promontory, it's surrounded by interesting remnants of the Phoenicians and Romans who once lived here. And in the rustic harbour, a pretty 17th century fortress keeps guard over the boats.
Like everyone else, you'll probably spend most time in the buzzing main square. Thronged with people, it's a great place to watch life go by over a frothy cappuccino. Don't miss it at night either. Settle down at a lively pizzeria terrace and dig into the local delicacy of luscious seafood risotto. Then do as the locals do and end the day swapping stories over a sweet-tasting limoncella liqueur.
