Villa Sa Mandriola

If your idea of heaven is to live in a house right on the beach, where the first thing you see as you open your shutters in the morning is the sea, where you can swim at any time of the day just a few steps away from your garden, you will find Sa Mandriola completely irresistible.

No road or track separates this classically Mediterranean, whitewashed villa from the beach, but 13 steps - surely a lucky number in this case - lead straight down from the well-maintained lawn to a lovely pocket of sand framed by smooth, caramel-coloured rocks. The shortest stroll along the sea takes you to two larger beaches, and there are some good restaurants and bars in the centre of Palau, a 10 minute walk away.

But while Sa Mandriola is by no means isolated - the centre of Palau is just 1km away, as is the nearest supermarket - its position on a rocky promontory lends it a wonderfully secluded feel, and the views from the house and the beautiful, flower and herb-filled gardens, past the nearby lighthouse, are quite sensational. The islands of the Maddalena Archipelago are a permanent feature of this enchanting panorama, with the lights of Maddalena Town shimmering romantically across the bay at night, and on a clear day, you can even see the southern tip of Corsica.

The split-level villa provides light and airy accommodation with big picture windows in the living areas making the most of the views. An attractive, curved stairway leads up to the sleeping quarters, which comprise four bedrooms and two attractive shower rooms. With their painted bedsteads and antique furnishings, the bedrooms have all the charm of a real family home. The living/dining area opens onto a lovely shaded terrace and offers plenty of room for socialising, while the kitchen is well-equipped. Outside, a barbecue provides a further incentive to eat at home, while another shower room off the dining area completes the accommodation.
