Once upon a time, it was little more than a ferry hopping off point, but today holidays in Palau are much more about staying awhile and enjoying the facilities. In fact, it's become quite the resort, with some fine beaches and enough bars, restaurants and shops to keep you amused when you need a break from the sunbed. So, whether you've always fancied a sojourn on Sardinia's north coast, or you've simply taken pot luck on one of those last minute holidays, Palau will do nicely.
Travel to Palau with Thomson and you can book your own place in the sun. It's called Villa Sa Mandriola, and it's one of those dream properties that you don't come across every day. Self catering holidays don't come much better than this. Set right on the beach, this classic, whitewashed Mediterranean villa is in a secluded position, but just a kilometre or so from the centre of Palau. During the day you can gaze across to the profiles of the Maddalena Islands and by night catch the twinkling lights of Maddalena Town.
For a change of scene, it's worth taking an excursion inland. The landscapes beyond Palau are home to some of the famous 'nuraghi' burial chambers, not to mention quite a few highly interesting rock formations. Alternatively, take a trip back to the golden age of steam on the Green Train, which takes you through beautiful, unspoilt countryside you won't see from the road.
